What help do you get given

Postby Asshamed » Fri Mar 31, 2006 6:58 pm

My problems stem from epilepsy. I have never been seizure-free throughout life. I do work full-tim in an office, so have income coming in also.

Firstly I quite often turn the bedroom light off twice before going to bed, because I get anxious before going to bed that a seizure will occur in the night (as I have nocturnal ones). So feel one doesn't happen if I do that.

Secondly today I got caught by Tecos food store for pinching two combs (worth 38p in total) a measeley amount. But the security guard stopped me & I have been given a year's ban. Will have to write into the store Manager in a year's time to be allowed back into their stores again. Luckily the Police weren't called, but even so I feel ashamed for doing it. I have stolen small things before also, and don't know why I do it, but just think I've fallen into a habbit from having gotten away with it many a times before & don't know what to do to get out of it. What can I do to help myself?

I did not know that you could have OCD from epilepsy. I've had sezuires when I was younger and I think I have OCD.

Anyway, maybe you should seek treatment for clepto (I don't know the suffex here. Cleptosysm? Cleptomy??)

Cleptomania. Although this is the name given to the compulsion to steal, not a habit.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is most often used to treat OCD, there are also other therapies that are useful. You can get referred to a psychiatrist for assessment via your doctor. The psychiatrist should then be able to refer you to a suitable therapist.
