nose ocd

Postby paranoiD » Sat Feb 25, 2006 9:11 am

I cannot stop looking at nosez. Could it be a form of ocd? People make me nervous and since I know that looking at noses makes people selfconscious, it makes my problem worse. It sounds really strange but it has been very stressful. I cannot make conversation because I cannot look at eyes bat look at nose.

i don't know if it's ocd. i do know that i also look at noses a lot, but i look at them to see if my own nose isn't funny-looking...

Firnlothwen,
thank you for the response. Please let me know, do you look at noses constantly, or are youu able to make eye contact? Because i cannot make eye contact, because i am distracted by noses. I know it sounds strange but i cannot control it, even if i try hard to stop it. It's not that I am obsessed with noses but i cannot look at a person without concentrating on their nose, and they become very selfconscious or annoyed. this is why it's depressing me, because it's impossible to make relationships.

i look at noses, ears, mouths, just about everything exept the eyes. i'm afraid people will see things in mine so i avoid eye contact.
i try to compare my own facials with theirs so i feel less 'weird' about myself..

Same here, I look anywhere but can't look at eyes. It's almost like I can't focus in the eyes. I know it is due to lack of self-esteem and uncomfortableness around others but I want to change because it's affecting my life. I have no relationships anymore because people laugh at me or think I'm strange, but I really try my best not to look at noses.
How do others react, when you do not make eye contact? Many people avoid me or feel uncomfortable around me because of my habit. Unfortunately, eye contact is so important today that I feel abnormal or weak because I cannot do such a simple thing. I cannot keep relationships because I focus on nosesand it's really depressing
thanks for the response

people sometimes think i'm being rude, and they even tell me. when they do, or when i notice they feel uncomfortable with my staring, i just tell them i have a problem with eye contact.

right now i'm trying something new. i try to look at the upper part of the nose, like in between the eyes. that way it seems to them as if i'm looking at their eyes when in fact i'm still looking at their noses. it helps a bit, cause sometimes i glimps at their eyes. it's like reducing the distance to the eyes.

thank you Firnlothwen,
I admire you for having the courage to tell people you have a problem with eye contact.People dont even give me the chance to tell them I have a problem because they think my habit is too strange.Plus im embarassed and depressed abot having to tell people 'I cannot look at eyes, but focos on noses'. Many people have been rejecting me or laughing at me because I concentrate on noses.I cant understand why making eye contact is so impmortant.
I will try to look between the eyes thanks for the advice. The problem is that sometimes I get a headache from trying NOT to look at the nose. My eyes get tired from having to focus on eyes and they also get tired when I focus elsewhere. I will try it,but I wish there was an easier way to be able to look at someone in the eyes.

i understand that the headaches make it even harder. try to move your sight up bit by bit. don't force it. move up when you feel up to it. take it step by step untill you're used to the new spot to look at.

i wish i could just take it away from you, but i can't. all i can tell you is that not everyone has a lack of understanding. keep the faith and you WILL find those who are willing to help you. don't wait for a chance to tell them. if you think their uncomfortable, just tell them. you can stay in control.

That is the kindest thing person ever said to me. I also wish I could 'take it away' from myself but it's so difficult. I try everyday to stop focusing on noses but I cannot see 'past' this problem. I have little faith in finding people who accept me because everyone I met/meet have laughed at me or even talked behind my backs, telling all of the people they know about my strange habit. I will take your advice and try slowly. Unfortunately i cannot immediately tell a person I meet 'sorry I'm looking at your nsoe because I have mental problems' because I'm afraid and embarassed. But I will try to...
thank you Firnlothwen
it hurts when no one can understand or help, and when everyone thinks you're abnormal.

i know it hurts hun. but there are people who accept you for who you are. look at me! i know you've got problems, and i know you look at noses, and i'm not laughing or something like that...

maybe you just haven't met the right person yet. but they exist, they really do.
