How Long is Your Attention Span When Not Focused on YOU?

Postby svenska500 » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:05 am

I am curious as to how long my fellow narcs actually pay attention to others in a conversation with another when this other person is talking about themselves/their problems/issues not relating to 'you'.

I have about 10 seconds where I am able to listen and take it in (before becoming extremely bored) and usually 15 seconds max. If the other individual spends longer than this time period without referencing me or something that relates to me, I tune out almost completely.. yet if my name and/or something of interest to me comes up somewhere after this 10-15 second period, this time period starts again.

What about the rest of you?

If I've just met that person or if I find them really boring (I find 90% of people boring) , it lasts for like 20 seconds. Even when they are answering a question I've asked.

My friend told me once that she knew that I was bored, because my nostrils had dilated! (Trying not to yawn.) That still makes me laugh!

Pretending to drink my tea is a good way to hide a yawn. I remember an episode of The Simpsons, where Ned Flanders was explaining how cider was made, and Homer's brain floated out of his head, saying, "That's it, I'm out of here!", leaving Homer to fall face down onto the floor. Man, I empathised then!

Haha, that's an interesting trick. The face does match a hot beverage drinking one.

I have some kind of chain-yawn going on, it's wierd.

I can pay attention for a pretty good while, but I'll grow extremely bored. If I get bored I'll usually find some way to interject either a story/point about me or something that I find interesting. I've recently realized that I really like to talk about myself, something I never noticed before lol. Just yesterday we had a friend over and were talking about things, and after the conversation turned to something boring I switched the computer on and logged into a game while the husband and friend kept chatting away.

I used to just tune out anything or anyone I didn't find interesting.

sometimes i like the focus on me and somtimes i like to focus on others i'm always looking to see how others function in order to controle them i defendly look more to how they say things than extualy what they say so i somtimes don't pay attention to what they say + i like to keep my eye on more than one thing at the time
my 1st diagnosis was adhd but i think that's more of a bordem thing (paying attention in class is boooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrriiiiing) 2nd diagnosis docter told me i problebe never had adhd

Is there any topic that would make your attention span last longer. Like something that hurts you and where you can relate more easily?

Like once I talked about a cousin who stopped talking to me for no apparent reason...and for a rare time I felt she was ''REALLY'' listening and being empathetic. I felt saw she was way too attentive to what I was saying, without even interrupting me once.

After interrogating her, I discovered she lived a very similar story.
Every journey begins by a single step.

Per se the original post. If the topic relates to me/others, then the attention is focused. If the topic at hand is not relevant to me in any fashion, then I become bored and/or interject to change the subject within 15 seconds max usually.
