Sense of time

Postby antonia312 » Sat May 28, 2011 7:01 pm

I am wondering if Ns have a different sense of time than nons? I know an N who sometimes lock himself in his apartment for weeks. I always wonder what he is doing all this time by himself. Do they not feel hunger or needs? Sometimes he would forget when certain things happened. Perhaps. Flashbacks are often as well?

Yes, this appears to be true, but there's no real studies on it, just anecdotal evidence. Time seems to be able to go by without us noticing. (It's possibly a good indication of the separation between narcissistic traits and full NPD?)

My sense of time is crap. Sometimes I think I live in a time warp. I've literally sat down, thought a couple words, and then looked at the clock to find ten minutes have passed. I never know what day it is. I'm almost jokingly forgetful, too.

Your mention of not feeling hunger is a different thing, I think - I don't know if it's a NPD trait, but I "translate" a lot of my emotions as physical sensations. If I'm in a good mood I can go without eating all day...but if I get stressed I'm suddenly hungry-even if I just ate 5 minutes ago.

I don't know what you mean by flashbacks?

So when you are distressed you feel hungry all the time? Would you say. You have bad living habits?

By "flashbacks" I mean it's hard to different certain events happened long Time ago or just recently. Maybe deja vu?

Hunger was just an example. Probably more comment to get aches and pains and things. Like incorrectly processing emotion.

However, anorexia has some sort of correlation with NPD, at least in literature. Never talked to anyone on here about it, though. (Besides myself, I mean.)

I frequently have no idea how long ago things happened. A month? A year? Meh.

If by flashbacks you mean re-experiencing events, that's a no. The realm of borderliners that is.

So do you mean that you can't even trust the basic instincts, like you are hungry, or you feel painful or you really want this? How about desires? Do you have desires? Like you really want to eat that cake which looks delicious, or you really want to have sex with this person.

And do you mean that such senses, such as hunger, or pain, are often times deflection of something else? I mean, for example, something else is going on, but instead of feeling that, you feel hungry. etc?

Not really. Again that might be my other personal pathologies and not the NPD....it's common with eating disorders, for example.

How about desires? Do you have desires? Like you really want to eat that cake which looks delicious, or you really want to have sex with this person.

Tons of desires. A bit of a sense freak. Part of the impulsiveness I suppose.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

So do you think there is any correlation between eating disorder or sleeping disorder with NPD?

How about desires? Do you have desires? Like you really want to eat that cake which looks delicious, or you really want to have sex with this person.

Tons of desires. A bit of a sense freak. Part of the impulsiveness I suppose.

But those desires are not associated with the person, right? So the desire for sex with a person is the same as watching porn? And eating something delicious made by someone you "like" or "idealize" does not make you feel grateful toward that person either?

Thanks for your answers.
