Narcissists and Funerals

Postby smilee » Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:47 pm

I was reading a quote from "Neals son concerning his dad flirting with his [unrecognized daughter Tatum at the funeral] and he said this about Ryan O'neal ------ 'his father
was irritated when he found out Fawcett had cancer because the attention "was diverted to Farrah."

Ryan, he said, is an "absolute complete narcissist in every way."
So, my question is--Do narcissists act normally at funerals, do they cry if it's not a family member because they are supposed to or because they see others cry? How do narcissists deal with funerals or do you avoid them altogether?

the only reason why i would go to the funeral is to be able to show off how hansom i look in a suit. other than that, i can get a lot of attention there as well. for the most part funerals are boring as all hell. if im related to the person, i dont know i feel empty inside thinking about how i would react. but like i already said i look good in a suit, and theres attention, other than that funerals serve me nothing.
Trust all the things I tell you are true, dress up in your best so I can be proud of you, and never believe I won't turn on you, and never believe I do this for you. You're leading me on again and I find it, yeah I like it, and I'm reeling in awe for sure, now I know it was given to me.

i avoid funerals. if i had to attend one i'd just sort of tune out and pray that it was over quickly. i can play somber quite easily.

I'm not sure I see the point of this particular question. A funeral is no different from any other gathering. I've only been to funerals for people I didn't know very well mostly extended family. It's kind of no big deal, I schmooze a bit if there's anyone interesting to talk to, find the food table, etc. If I get really bored I can always go find an empty room and chill out or maybe play with my phone or music player for a break. During the actual service I just sit quietly like everyone else, usually I listen and just try to notice whatever details are interesting, occasionally my mind wanders to other things. For the people who are closest to the deceased and probably very emotional, well I'll walk up and pay my respects and say the appropriate words at some point during the event, but for the most part will avoid those people. They're always busy anyway so avoiding them isn't hard.

The first time somebody I'm close to dies, perhaps I'll have a different answer. There are a handful people who's deaths will affect me and make me very sad.

Wow, you pathological narcissists are idiotic as hell.

There are multiple reasons I would go to a funeral if it were within my own possibility

1) To pick up chicks (yes laugh, we've all seen wedding crashers, but I've done this since before that move, and I'm only 21)
2) To show how compassionate you are (pfft)
3) To show off your expensive suit (if you go in a cheap suit (>$1000 it doesn't count)
All I know is no one dies
I'm still confusing love with need.

They go to a funeral NOT because they want to be noticed for their suit. They go to a funeral so they appear to care that someone died. They get attention "for their loss". They appear human. They are expected to be there. Image.

You know, that's a sad way to get supply, maybe not to a narcissist though.
