Narcissistic Personalty Inventory

Postby Jasmer » Wed Apr 20, 2016 5:01 pm

This was posted in another topic. I thought it was kind of a neat test so I thought I'd start a new topic. Take the test here and share your results! A google search suggests an NPI score of 30 or more is significant. Mine was 29, not quite there. :P

Code: Select all
The Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI)

The NPI measures several distinct facets of Narcissism. Your overall score was 29 on a scale ranging from 0 to 40. The NPI assesses various facets of narcissism. We summarize three of the major facets below, along with your scores for each of them.

Your score on leadership is 9
You scored at the 86 th percentile on this subscale of the NPI. This means that 86 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours. Leadership refers to a person's leadership skills and power. People who score higher on authority like to be in charge. On the extreme ends of this trait, they like to gain power for power's sake alone.

Your score on vanity is 6.
You scored at the 88 th percentile on the vanity subscale of the NPI. This means that 88 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours. This trait refers to a person's vanity--excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements.

Your score on exhibitionism/entitlement is 4
You scored at the 90 th percentile on this subscale of the NPI. This means that 90 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours. Exhibitionism refers to a person's need to be the center of attention, and willingness to ensure they are the center of attention. At the extreme high end of this trait a person may try to become the center of attention at the expense of other's needs. Entitlement refers to the extent to which people feel that the world owes them favorable treatment or the extent to which people feel that they have a right to something (e.g., praise, recognition, attention).

Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI)

One of the narcissism questionnaires you took was the Pathological Narcissism Inventory (NPI). The PNI comes from the clinical tradition of conceptualizing narcissism. It assess two pathological components of narcissism: grandiosity and vulnerability.

Your score on grandiosity is 48.
You scored at the 96.1 th percentile on this subscale of the PNI. This means that 96.1 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours.

Grandiosity comprises three traits: exploitativeness, grandiose fantasy, and self-sacrificing self-enhancement. Exploitativeness refers to a person’s tendency to manipulate others. On the extreme high end of this trait people find it easy to talk their way out of things and have no scruples about influencing others into doing what they want them to do.

Grandiose fantasy refers to a person’s need to fantasize about being admired and accomplishing special things. On the extreme high end of this trait people constantly fantasize about being admired, respected, and famous. They also fantasize about having an impact on the world around them and performing heroic deeds. Self-sacrificing self-enhancement refers to a person’s tendency to help others in order to enhance their self-image. On the extreme high end of this trait people help others and make personal sacrifices for the benefit of others under the pretense of sincere altruism while their real goal is to maintain and enhance their inflated self-image. Helping others makes them feel important and better than the person receiving help.

Your score on vulnerability is 41.
You scored at the 73.1 th percentile on this subscale of the PNI. This means that 73.1 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours.

Vulnerability comprises four traits: entitlement rage, contingent self-esteem, hiding the self, and devaluing. Entitlement rage refers to a person’s tendency to feel angry when they do not get what they think they deserve. On the extreme high end of this trait people feel very annoyed when they do not get the attention, admiration, and respect that they expect from others. They also get angry when they are criticized or do not get what they want from others. Contingent self-esteem refers to fluctuations in a person’s self-esteem that depend on the attention and recognition the person receives from others. On the extreme high end of this trait people only feel good about themselves when they receive attention, admiration, and acknowledgment from others. When they feel unnoticed or disliked, they feel worthless and bad about themselves.

Hiding the self refers to a person’s need to hide their faults and needs from others. On the extreme high end of this trait people feel anxious and ashamed when others notice their needs. They try to do everything on their own because they see it as a weakness to ask for help and rely on others. Devaluing refers to a person’s tendency to avoid people out of fear of being disappointed. On the extreme high end of this trait people feel ashamed for needing recognition from others. They avoid people when they are afraid that their expectations will not be met and they will not receive acknowledgment.

Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ)

One of the narcissism questionnaires you took was the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ). The NARQ assesses narcissism as a normal personality trait. The two main components assessed by the NARQ are admiration and rivalry.

Your score on Admiration is 29 out of 45.

Admiration refers to a person’s need to be admired by others and to be the center of attention. Admiration also refers to whether a person views himself or herself as great, special, and better than others. People on the extreme high end of this trait tend to seek high levels of praise, attention, and admiration from others. They show self-assured and charming behaviors and feel that they have a right to favorable treatment. People high on admiration engage in fantasies of being very popular, beautiful, and powerful.

Your score on Rivalry is 32 out of 45.

Rivalry refers to a person’s need to defend his or her overly positive self-views against real or imagined threats such as criticism, failure, or a lack of attention. On the extreme high end of this trait people show a general disregard for the needs and feelings of others. Their derogatory attitudes towards other people are reflected by hostile and aggressive behaviors. They show annoyed and spiteful reactions when other people are successful and the center of attention.

On one hand I want to disagree with this result, on the other I have to admit most of it does seem appropriate. What are your results? Do you agree with them? Do you think your results are higher or lower than you expected? I feel like mine are higher than expected in some areas. I expected grandiosity, entitlement, and vanity to be moderately high at the very least.

Leadership score surprised me. I don't seek power for power's sake, or even particularly enjoy actually wielding said power, but I do like to be an authority in general. A bit surprised at rivalry because, while I am competitive even in normal every day activities, I've never really viewed myself as a poor sport. Thinking about it, I kind of am, though, because I do get quite irritated when I feel somebody is doing something better than me, and I tend to be the "one upper". This $#%^ seriously pervades even every day life. Everything is a contest lol.

Mine was 30 when I last did it. I can't be asked to do it again. 30 puts me smack bang in the middle of The Spectrum. I think it only measures Counter Dependent types.

I don't remember my results now, if I take the test again, I'll let you know.

Jasmer the google search result - according to which some concern starts from 30 - seems wrong to me. If I remember, an average score for US celebrities is about 17. I don't think a normal person (meaning not a celebrity) needs much more to be considered a narcissist. I was always wondering why I score higher than US celebrities? I am not a celebrity! I am sure Madonna has been much more concerned about beauty, fame and success throughout her life than I am. So why would my score be higher than hers?

Spaced your score on leadership is not low at all.

I am suprised - I always score very high for vanity. Like really high - more than 99 percent. But if I really am a N, then I'm rather cerebral. Of course, I am beautiful :) so I take care of my looks. it would be a sin to not take care of such amazing face and body ;) But in general I am all about intelligence, books, academic achievements and so on. So my score for vanity is always surprising to me. Can I be both cerebral and somatic?

Anyway, I'll share my results if I take the test again.

HR_p Thanks so much for sharing! It's great to see how a non would score. I am still hesitating when looking at myself- a N or not a N. So to see that other people have such low scores... at least compared to mine, is an important info.

Though, on the other hand, when I think about it... I actually feel much superior to Madonna. At least I have real talents, and I can be a real artist, not just a cheap blond pop star. I know it sounds arrogant, but that's how I feel. So maybe there is something to those results.

Apologies for interrupting such a good thread, I had some wine. I'll be quiet from now on.

The Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI)

The NPI measures several distinct facets of Narcissism. Your overall score was 40 on a scale ranging from 0 to 40. The NPI assesses various facets of narcissism. We summarize three of the major facets below, along with your scores for each of them.

Your score on leadership is 12
You scored at the 99 th percentile on this subscale of the NPI. This means that 99 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours. Leadership refers to a person's leadership skills and power. People who score higher on authority like to be in charge. On the extreme ends of this trait, they like to gain power for power's sake alone.

Your score on vanity is 8.
You scored at the 99 th percentile on the vanity subscale of the NPI. This means that 99 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours. This trait refers to a person's vanity--excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements.

Your score on exhibitionism/entitlement is 6
You scored at the 99 th percentile on this subscale of the NPI. This means that 99 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours.

Your score on grandiosity is 40.
You scored at the 83.2 th percentile on this subscale of the PNI. This means that 83.2 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours.

Your score on vulnerability is 15.
You scored at the 9.5 th percentile on this subscale of the PNI. This means that 9.5 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours.

Your score on Admiration is 44 out of 45.

Your score on Rivalry is 44 out of 45.

I'm really only surprised that my score for vulnerability isn't lower, though I guess the bit about becoming angered when not getting what I want is true.

Below are my results. A bit weird, because last time I took the test (just 2 days ago) they were slightly different. Maybe that's because I am not very self-aware. Anyway, they are always high.

...

According to Greek mythology, Narcissus was a young man who was renowned for his beauty. He was exceptionally proud and disdained those who expressed an interest in him. The goddess Nemesis observed Narcissus' behavior and decided to punish him. One day while walking in the forest, Narcissus became thirsty and went to drink from a stream. As he saw his reflection, he fell in love with it, not knowing that it was him. As he bent down to kiss it, it seemed to "run away" and he was heartbroken. He grew thirstier but he wouldn't touch the water for fear of damaging his reflection, so he eventually died of thirst while staring at his own reflection.

You completed three questionnaires that are designed to measure narcissistic tendencies: the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ), and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory(NPI). By completing all three of these measures, it should be possible for you to get a better understanding of how narissistic you are and, importantly, whether different measures agree in their assessment of your personality. We summarize your results below.

Your score on leadership is 7
You scored at the 67 th percentile on this subscale of the NPI. This means that 67 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours.

Helping others makes them feel important and better than the person receiving help.

Your score on vulnerability is 47.
You scored at the 85.2 th percentile on this subscale of the PNI. This means that 85.2 % of the people who have filled out this questionnaire to date have scores lower than yours.

Their derogatory attitudes towards other people are reflected by hostile and aggressive behaviors.
