Quitting my medications, need help

Postby Alice Bowie » Thu Nov 05, 2009 7:39 am

It has been a week since I stopped taking my medications I was supposed to keep taking them for a year and that’s next month; I was taking antipsychotics (6 months), antidepressants (one year and a half) and medications for anxiety (only when needed) I was fine but since a week ago I couldn’t find my antidepressants anywhere near I live, It seemed not a big deal one month less, but now… I don’t know what to do I feel angry, anxious and I need to eat and smoke a lot, I don’t want to talk to anyone and I don’t even have the patience to do it, I am sick and tired of everything I cant stay quiet, I just want to jump, cry , watch TV or something but I cant find what I want to do, I just cant do anything, everything is boring, I cant sleep and I don’t want to, even if I take my anxiety medications, what’s going on? what can I do now?

Generally, you need to be weaned off of most psychiatric meds. The fact that you stopped taking them so abruptly probably accounts for a lot of your symptoms. You're probably going through withdrawal.

If I were you, I would call your doctor and get back on your meds. Then, if you want to taper off your medication, do it under his supervision. It's odd that you were not able to find your meds near where you live. Try having your doctor call and ask if one pharmacy can ship the meds to another one near you--or to a hospital where you can pick them up.

In the meantime, try to exercise, even if it is hard for you. Don't overdo it, but try to work off some of that excess energy you have (unless you have a medical condition and your doctor has told you not to). Since you can't find anything that you WANT to do, made a deal with yourself to do several things for five minutes each. Find ways to fill time. If you feel like jumping, jump. If you're frustrated, punch a pillow. If you can't sleep, try watching really boring TV. Exercise a few hours before sleep should help, too. Try to limit caffeine and sugar, especially a few hours before bed.

Most importantly, try and create a schedule for yourself. That way, you won't feel like you're just floating through space. Schedule cigarette breaks. That way, you'll be thinking "It's 2 pm, I'm going to look through clothes I haven't worn lately" instead of "this sucks."
Do not take my advice before talking to your doctor/counselor/other professional. Depending on where you live, you may be able to find free, confidential care. Most importantly, sometimes your shrink can be wrong. Get a second opinion.

Ugh...one would think that, at this point in the economy, companies would be bending over backwards for customers as opposed to the other way around. In any case, I'm glad that you'll have your meds soon. From there, you and your doc can talk about the next step. Hang in there!

Oh yeah, and I find that singing (or rather, screaming) at the top of my lungs helps relieve some of the tension, too. I like to follow something loud and fast with something relaxing. The idea is the same as with exercise: get my heart rate up, then slow it down. Just...not TOO far down.
