Fiction Vs. Non-fiction

Postby Future Nihilist » Thu Nov 06, 2008 1:21 am

How do you guys prefer your entertainment?
If you like both a lot, just pick a favored for the poll

I personally have no imagination and find it difficult to become interested in stories that have a lot of background info to them. I love movies of all kinds (because they're short), books and articles about any form of science or animals, and I am addicted to documentaries. I don't even care what the doc is about or if I'll remember the info, I just have to watch it.

I'm guessing that I'm in the minority here though?

i personally read an equal amount of both.

i looove fiction! val mcdermid is by far my fave fiction author, but i read A LOT of fiction. i also like stephen king, kelley armstrong, laurell k hamilton, margaret weiss and tracy hicks, jim butcher... usually stuff about people with f***ed up murder scenes and vampires or supernatural references. i have deep interests in this along with truly personal preferences..................

plus i loooove to learn about animals and world history and psychology.

as well as religions which could be classified under both nonfiction and fiction depending on who you're talking to...

i too love movies bc it takes a lot to grab my attention. i usually go more towards 'b' movies... but i love pretty much anything but chick flicks. while i do enjoy those too on occasion (being that i am a girl and i can't ashamedly deny my girlishness)

i guess i just generally have an equal appreciation for d. all of the above

i agree with asuka i like anything that i can relate to
BUT i love to learn...

idk i guess i'm weird

The only real time I'm interested in fiction is if it's fantasy based I guess. The whole magic phenomenon is really catchy to me. I like some sci-fi too I guess like Stargate (different planet every episode almost) and Star Wars (cause the force is awesome).

i dont think you can say really which is better or more useful. i chose fiction purely because i had to choose 1 to see the results.

anyway, you can't say which is better or more useful because what use is 1 whithout the other. the world wouldnt work. facts arent useful until they are used for something. you need an idea which starts as fiction, to use them. but at the same time fiction is no good whithout fact because you couldnt make use of any of those ideas whithout information. alot of fiction has at least a small element of fact in it, and fiction can encourage people interests, leading to the discovery of new things as they persue them.

very badly explained, but you get my point

It all depends upon my mood at the time. In the past I've gone through extended periods of reading fiction - books which are considered 'classics' and even trashy, pulp nonsense - and mostly enjoyed them all on their own merits. Where non-fiction is concerned I'm probably more careful in my choices. It's important to me how information is presented, and so that maybe limits my reading a little more.

I believe that books are one of the important simple pleasures in life, though.
Keep moving forward.
