Because i'm Dutch, here are some random facts about The Netherlands
- It's one of the safest places when it comes to infrastructure (there are specially-designated "fietspaden" or bike paths all over the country and cars and pedestrians are not allowed to ride or walk on them).
- It is the bicycle capital of the world with more than 18 million in the country. That's more than 1 bicycle per person. On average, a Dutch person cycles 2.5 km per day and 900 km per year.
- The Dutch are the world experts on keeping back water from the sea and rivers turning Netherlands into an Atlantis. The US government turned to the Dutch for help during the hurricane Katrina disaster.
- The Netherlands has the highest number of part-time workers in the EU
- The Dutch are the tallest people in the world with an average height of 184 cm for men and 170 cm for women. Some believe its the combined result of DNA and dairy.
- The Dutch have the lowest incidence of lactose intolerance of any country at only 1%.
- Its commitment to foreign aid is 2nd among the leading 18 nations according to UNICEF.
- It has the highest population density in Europe with 487 inhabitants per square kilometre.
- Schiphol is the world's lowest-lying airport. In fact, the NS station at Schiphol lies 10 metres (32 feet) below sea level.
- It is still the historic windmill capital of the world with over 1,000 vertical mills still in working condition. Imagine the sight when it once had 10,000 windmills.
