I take them both. 5-htp didn't do anything for me sleepwise on its own. Actually it made it worse because it gave me too much energy. I was trying a 50 mg twice a day. Won't dare take more due to the excessive energy thing.
I tried adding melatonin last week and it is working well. Started at 1.5 mg, but scaling down to 0.75mg. That's about as low as I can go since those pills are already cut into quarters.

Recently I started taking melatonin, and so far it has been the only successful thing I've tried that can actually make me sleep. I've tried actual sleeping medications but I was still up all night. Melatonin makes it possible for me to fall asleep at a normal time. When I wake up, I actually feel good as if I actually received sufficient sleep. That's something completely out of the ordinary for me.
