Brain injury- causing insomnia

Postby katy31 » Tue Dec 09, 2014 11:05 pm

has anyone heard of this?

brain injuries and central nervous system injuries that cause insomnia after?

Im trying to find out what is going on. im 31 yrs old and i have never had sleep trouble ever up until a few months ago when i got a tbi traumatic brain injury and some cns/spine damage

i have always had no trouble to sleep. what is normal for me is to sleep 8-10 hours no matter what time i doze off. and some weekends i would sleep up to 12 hours. it would take me less than 2 minutes to doze off, and i even could doze off with the light on and if people went into my room or there was noise or the alarm clock went off i would still sleep through that. i was a heavy sleeper

the only time i remember having trouble falling asleep was if i go to a new enviroment such as a hotel. then i had difficulty in new situations but besides staying in a hotel i never had trouble with insomnia

then about 8 months ago i suffered a head injury(traumatic brain injury) and other cns injury and spine damage

the part of my brain that got injured is the part of the brain that deals with sleep. i also have damage to part of the spine that deals with sleep and circadian clock

i also started to get headaches after the head injury, it is also not normal for me because i never got headaches before

so now since the injury my sleeping got worse and i have some insomnia now

i got tested in a sleep center and they said i dont have sleep apnea and that i have insomnia and they dont know why

in the past 3 and half months i cannot sleep more than 3-5 hours each night. many days i cannot doze off at all. i went a few weeks without being able to doze off for 14 days in a row

it is not due to worry or anxiety

sleeping pills from over the counter did not help

i dont know if ill be able to doze off each night. last yr it took me 2 minutes to doze off and i only had about 2 nights of the year of staying up on purpose

now i dont know if ill be able to sleep. and this past month im going with 4 hours of sleep each day

a few nights ago i got zero hours and stayed up the entire night staring at the ceiling

i have not had a normal nights sleep since 4 months ago

i dont even feel like i slept at all since 4 months ago and i do not feel tired at all anymore no matter what. i do things to try to make my self feel tired. jog outside, drink tea, herbs, vitamins and it does not do much

i cant feel tired anymore since the summer

even if i stay up a few nights in a row or the 2 weeks i could not doze off i was not tired i had alot of energy and was jittery

i took melatonin and it did not make me feel tired and it didnt help me

i feel more rested when i do not sleep for an entire night than when i do sleep for a few hours 3-5 hours

why am i not able to get 8 hours of sleep anymore?
i dont feel well rested, when i do sleep 3-5 hours it is like poor quality sleep

i have stiff muscles and shaky

im also getting irritable and feeling depressed after not being able to sleep normally

does anyone know about brain injuries and cns damage and sleep trouble after? insomnia after brain inuries?

i dont know where to read about it sofar the only information i find on insomnia is that insomnia is caused by worries and stress and that is not me it is not what is causing my sleep trouble

i tried many things. i dont want to be on prescription sleeping pills and become dependant on sleeping pills like some people do

i dont want to get to a situation where if i dont take a prescription pill then i dont sleep

i am only 31 yrs old and i can not imagine a future like this especially since insomnia is not normal for me. i am someone who usually lives with 8-10 hours of sleep

and now i can barely sleep 3-5 hours

my life is distrupted, i cant work because of this. my concentration and memory is bad because i havent slept normally in a few months, i am not myself anymore

i stay home most days looking on the computer for articles and videos on how to help me to sleep and to find out what is wrong

Your thalamus area was disrupted and thus your rhythm is 'zig-zagging' damaged neurons which is startling your circadian system to a severe degree.

Aside from neuronal regeneration which is in its infancy stage in labs, I would suggest seeking a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist to help artificially regulate your newly scarred sleep patterns.
