Postby whero » Sat Jan 17, 2009 11:12 am

Does anyone have any tips for losing weight? I know some people gain weight after being put on alot of medication. Maybe you have stories of weight recovery?

Hi, whero! I read somewhere that you can figure out how many calories you eat in one day and then try to reduce the number by 300 calories and have a work out that burns 200 calories every day or at least work out a few times a week and go for a walk on the other days or something. This seems to have worked for me.

best thing to do is eat little and often which will keep your body burning calories long after you ve eaten them.Start with a sereal bar if you hate breakfast or don t have time to eat early in the day ...like me. do for a brief walk each day or during a lunch break if you work in the office or are stuck indoors.will make you feel so much better i fear. failing that join a weight watchers group.i have been at mine 16 wks and lost 5st 2lbs already...i feel so much better although a long way to go yet and being 5ft doesnt help at all in my case.
good luck to you i wish you well :D

Hi i used to count cals all the time and weighed 128kg four years ago and today i weighed 73 kg but i still am terrified of scales. i have chronic ideas of what size i look and the size i actually am, i am losing my track here. I would have a box of snacks that added up to say a quarter of what i was allowing myself. crackers, fruit, diet yoghurts,a cookie, and that was it when the box was empty i had finsihed all snacks. meals were porridge or cereal with natural yoghurt, soup for lunch and normal meal at night with family. no bread but replaced it with pitta as could fill it with so much and felt full quickly. I hate my body and i struggle but we must not let food or low esteem win.Easier said than done.
good luck with weight loss . be good to yourself.

Weight loss

Postby seulki3 » Sat Jan 31, 2009 7:25 pm

whero,
I don't know your current weight, but being overweight is probably of symptom of other problem(s).

As for weight loss tips:
1) Change your mindset/psychology about food. Change the way you think about food.
2) Watch your portion size.
3) Exercise. It will make you feel better than eating your way out of sorrow, pain or frustration.

You should figure out your BMR. Then deduct 500 from it and that's your daily calorie limit. Stay at, or below, that.

You might also want to work out to build muscle. Muscle weight requires more calories to sustain than fat. Two people with equal height/weight can sit on the couch together and the one with more muscle mass will burn more calories without even moving.

Even little things make a difference. As simple as it is, the temperature of the water you drink can help a little. Drink cold water to force your body to burn calories in order to warm it down.

The best thing would be to find a diet/nutrition site. Lots to learn about this stuff.

I hope you are not talking about the cold yellow snow. It cracked me up, that avatar, I couldn't stop laughing.

On topic:

do not expect results over night. I recommend balanced diet and jogging every evening over the period of one calendar year. That is if you want not to regain weight, it must be done over 1 year at least.

Otherwise, if you start the diet and finish it after 2 months to go back to your old habits, the old weight will come back in a heart beat.

1 year is a minimum period to " teach " your metabolism and body to adapt to and accept new habits.

Balanced diet: nothing more complicated than those standard diet pyramids you can find in any MP's office : sugars, fat and fast food at the top, and cereals, fruit and veggies, fish at the bottom of the pyramid.

Good luck.

Hey, can't blame a kid for trying to market his *cough* lemonade stand.

I agree with two_roads that it should take a while to lose all the weight. You can go on a fad diet and lose it in 16 weeks, but it'll come back after you're done dieting. What you want to do isn't to diet, but make lifestyle changes that will last a long time.

The food pyramid isn't a bad thing, but I think it needs updating.

There's a current diet that's giving people some really good results. It's based on, I believe, 50-60% of your daily calories from fat. The rest of the calories from protein. That's a lot of fat considering it's at the top of the pyramid. The funniest thing about it is I've heard of people losing 150lbs.....from eating mostly fat. :?

You don't get it...

It's at the top, because a lil food can fit in that top / peak. ( small amount).. see the base of the pyramid how wide it is, and it suggests a large quantity that can be used of that particular food kinds at the bottom....

if you go upwards on the pyramid, that food toward the top should be eaten in smaller quantities, and rarely.

see, the pyramid did not exclude fat and sugar, it just suggested it should be eaten rarely and in small quantities.

that said, if you really cant live without cakes and chips, do have it, but do not eat every day, and not too much. Whereas you can eat cereals and pasta as much as you want. Ans drink lots of water ( avoid yellow snow water ). :D

No, I get it perfectly. I was comparing the pyramid to the diet I was referring to. The pyramid says to use fat/oils sparingly. It doesn't even let you have 1 actual serving.

Yet, that particular diet people are using to lose weight is based on fat. I'm talking a LOT of fat/oils. Half your daily calories are coming from that source. And people are losing 20, 30, 50, 100+ pounds; by eating fat.

So in that sense, it's a lot of fat when looking at the pyramid. Not saying the pyramid lets you eat a lot of it. :D
