Here's the deal

Blah blah blah let's cut to the chase, I fit the bill. Ok, so I read all the bullet points, I talk to a couple of people who know about HPD and it seems that yeah, it's there and I got it. However I'm not satisfied. I want to be DIAGNOSED. Problem is I live in the UK, and I ain't going to the doctors to say, "hi, been on the net and reckon I'm mental so what's the deal?"

So what's my next step in talking to someone, even if it's to try and sort out my head?

ukbloke, it very much sounds like you are relatively new to this type of thing, considering that you view yourself as mental. I can assure you that you are anything but mental, and that there are countless people out there who could be diagnosed with some mental disorder or another. However, they typically are getting on fine in their lives and never consider to look up to see if they can find a name for their problem. You, however, have done exactly this and have unearthed HPD. So what though? - It's not a bad thing my friend. You can use this knowledge to improve your life. I mean, now hat you know how you behave, you can learn to copunteract that and thereby use it to your advantage.

You don't need to get it officially diagnosed.

I didn't mean mental, that was a poor choice of words of my behalf. I'd like to be checked out, not diagnosed. It is now 7.11am and I have a clear head whereas last night I was too tired to stay awake.

Okay - no problem - but if you want to get checked out, then you'll have to pick up the phone and call your local doctor to arrange an appointment. Most likely, he/she will then refer you to a specialist. If he/she doesn't, then ask him/her to do so. You don't have to mention the Internet - and the reasraching you've been doing on it - to the doctor. All you must do is list your symptoms.

I'd feel silly going to the doctors to list those symptoms though. I think they'd probably just wonder why I'd bothered going.

That is where you are wrong though. Remove from your head all pre-conceived ideas that you have about doctors, and then just go. They aren't monsters who will have too little time for you - They can in fact be very helpful. I will give you one piece of advice though: Go to a female doctor. Trust me, you won't regret going, overall.

I'm going to go. Problem is, the symptoms... They sound very 'tepid', don't they? Last time I went (last August) they said it'd be 18 months to see someone, so I went to see the self-help person who was very useful but I've started recently to go back to my old ways. So I dunno...

Ah, the long waiting list - yeh - that's a setback. I wonder is there a different specialist that you can go to though, do you know?

Well... by posting this you've proved that you're (a) capable of introspection, (b) able to handle criticism (even if only from yourself), and (c) willing to admit you could improve yourself, and to work on it.

You've pretty much disqualified yourself from being HPD. :P

So what's my next step in talking to someone, even if it's to try and sort out my head?
Talk to a counsellor, definitely. Even if you're perfectly mentally healthy, talking to a good psychologist is an interesting exercise and you can learn a lot about yourself. Also, they'll probably get you to take a standardised test which will help diagnose any personality issues that you have. I'm hoping to get the DSM-IV statistical test results for myself and my wife today... should be interesting.
