When I get upset, I can't breathe. My breathing gets really rapid and shallow. I feel like I'm suffocating. What is causing this? What can I do to get it to stop happening? I'm scared.

It's anxiety it's how your body reacts. Don't be afraid, please! Try to find out if there is any way you could see a professional or when, if you can't right now. Try to take very long deep breaths.

Oh, you have a job? There might be free helplines and support groups for people who have anxiety. Ever looked into those?

Yes, I have a job. that isn't the reason i'm never home though. i tend to try to avoid problems, so I leave a lot.when i'm at home and people start yelling, i get that tight feeling in my chest and can't breathe. it scares me greatly.

Oh no, I'm sorry things are so bad at home. You couldn't see a psych through your job, no insurance? That stinks for sure. Looked for any charities that might offer free therapy or support yet?

What about getting some medication for anxiety? Benzodiazepines are usually quite cheap. I'm not sure how much they cost without insurance but if you have a job perhaps you could afford them.
