Lyrica?

I read on wikipedia that Lyrica would treat GAD and was approved by the EU in 2007. I've been having side effects from Neurontin (which I read is an "off label" treatment for anxiety) so I asked my shrink if he'd put me on Lyrica but he said he wouldn't due to Lyrica not being a psychiatric drug. I got the message through his nurse so I wasn't able to ask him any further questions. I assume that maybe it hasn't been approved by the FDA is his reasoning.

So it's funny I can take an "off label" drug but I can't take something approved for GAD (yes I know in Europe only).

Does the US always lag behind Europe 3 or 4 years?

The US and Europe have different approval requirements and sometimes a drug meets the requirements here before it does there, or vice versa. That said, often when there is evidence a medication is beneficial Doctors will prescribe medications for what is called "off label" so if you feel a medication change is in order I'd mention it to your doctor or Psychiatrist. While they may be aware of the medications use in Europe (and actually should be aware of it) please take along some information for them so they can help you decide if the medication is a good fit.

It's been over a year since I first posted this. Does anyone have any information on this being approved for GAD in the US? Thanks.
