How do you survive school?

Postby Grey Kameleon » Wed Mar 14, 2012 10:46 am

I'm really wanting to go back to college, but I don't see how it's possible when I'm not in control for days at a time, and everything could suddenly change completely at any moment.

How did you do it, if you even tried at all? Communication isn't just the problem, I can know what the others are doing and still not be able to maintain order.

Do the others have any motivation to do school? Or can you convince them? Perhaps suggest the benefits it could give in terms of job opportunities and money in the future for example?

It is extremely difficult to get through studies with DID. I found it extremely difficult. One thing that did help was recording the lectures on iPhone so that I could listen back later if some other part was out and I had forgotten.
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.

I have heard of someone getting through school very successfully because her alters helped her. Different alters did the course that they were interested in. Good Luck.

In our college, here's what helped me:
-we had notetakers (where a student in class would take notes, and I would copy it afterwards), a tape recorders were allowed in class, which were more reliable than the notetakers.
-I would do any of the tests/reports, I could at home, as soon as I could get approval to start(I would have to have my professors review my thesis's and they would select what topic I would write on).
-ask professors for extra projects I can do for credit to make up for tests taken in class,
-my department was small, so once I found out the professor's personality style, I would stick with it as I "knew" what they looked for in order to make an A. It really helped to find someone who took the class prior to me, and ask them what they thought of the teacher, if they had any notes, so I could get a "feel" for the professor's style. Or ask about their particular style, some professor's penalized extra work other's gave extra points, so it helped to know in advance if they say write a five page report they really mean, if you want anything higher than a C, write at least a seven page report.
-Some professors will grade with more leniency, if they see/know you work, so bringing a list of questions to class, or I would take notes on stuff I was reading as I was reading it, a basic outline of each chapter; as the next day, I could never recall what I read, and I need to make sure my teachers, knew I did do the assignment, especially if the called on me o.O.
That's all I remember now.
I found that it does get easier when you get further in your department as you get to know the personalities, and what the professor expects so you can succeed.
Good luck!!
