Hi I was wondering if having D.I.d makes getting a car license difficult? P.s why do some "health advocates" want there to be a law on D.I.D patients having children, I find this quite outrageous that because someone was abused at a young age they are never allowed to live a normal life. Is this so or myth?
- depressed and cut by the system in the past -
I really need some answers, I am living minute to minute waiting on different decisions by people that don't know me well and are very good at judging by appearance. I have a good psychiatrist, psychologist and peer worker. I am taking anti depressants and I am in more control then ever, Do you think all will be ok?
Thank you sincerely,
Nightworrier.

I think that the only thing that makes getting a driver's license difficult is poor driving. So if your DID affects your driving then perhaps.
There is really no possibility of having a law on ppl having kids. why would you say that and what is your source? Sure there are lots of ppl in the world who should not reproduce but how is DID a qualifier?
To most ppl, I am a "normal life". But if you look in everyone's head, deep, there is no normal. so the myth is "normalcy"
I hope you get some sleep

Funny, and all too true. I just wanted to add that there are "advocates" for just about anything that involves discrimination and eugenics. Mentally retarded people, criminals, mentally ill, different religions, different races, homosexuals, you name it and there's an advocate out there vying for a law to get rid of them.
I am many, but we are all in this together.

If anything, DID seems to make it easier to pass the test to get a driver license. There are many reports in the literature, especially in memoirs by people with DID, that the person has an alter who specializes in taking tests, and an alter who specializes in driving.

I know someone here in the UK who lost their licence due to DID, but then I still have mine as DID doesn't affect my driving at all. I think it varies depending on the system.
Also, re the kids thing I've heard of someone in Australia who was told by their T that if they let any of their alters out again then she'd have their kid taking off them (because one of her alters was 5years old).
I think it depends where you live really, but they can't stop anyone from having kids!!

Sorry, but we cannot concentrate long enough to read really long replies or threads so don't think we're being rude if we don't.

I would that directly to the board that licenses the therapist, as a complaint.

I have a really hard time driving with DID. I even have trouble crossing a street.
I don't ever drive in a big city, but places in the boonies I will. I am just far too dissociated to drive safely. I always thought I had brain damage or ADHD or something before I found out I had DID. But! I am pretty old and the only accident I have been in was when I was sitting at a red light and a diesel rammed into the back of me - not my fault at all.
In addition my eye sight changes. I failed the test at the drivers license place and has to go to an ophthalmologist to get a note that I could drive. Again, I did not know I had DID. I did not know what was wrong.
Probably the majority of people in the world should not be parents, those with DID are no different - some should - some should not. I have one alter, Winnie, and that is what she does is raise children. She was the best mother anyone could ever wish for. Then the host changed as we got older and the current hosts have been emotionally distant. No matter how hard I try to be a good Mother, some things will be passed down to my children. The only reason I am lucky enough to have 5 awesome children is that their dad made sure that my short comings never affected them. They hold anger inside, I can tell - but they try to understand why I am so distant so often. There is a lot of literature out there about dissociated parents raising kids.
All that said, I don't think there should be a law against those with DID having kids or driving. We, like all others, should be free to make up our own mind.
It would be really nice however if psychopaths did not have kids or drive.

I can definitely tell a difference in my driving abilities and went for years wondering if I should drive because I would get in my car and suddenly be hours away with no recollection of anything except sitting in the driver's seat.
Something that has worked well for us in recent years is a safety agreement.
1) You may only drive if you are 20+ (you may want to do younger, but none of my parts that are younger than that could safely accomplish the act of driving)
2) You may only drive if you are not currently enraged or suicidal.
3) You may not drive between the hours of 1AM-5AM.
4) You may only drive if you can do so in a manner that neither puts the body nor other people at harm.
5) You may only drive if you are willing to pay attention. (Ex: Some alters are very distracted by the radio and can't deal with driving and listening to the radio).
At any given time, this gives me about five potential drivers, and this includes one who absolutely LOVES to drive and is a significantly better driver than myself or any of the others.
For the most part this works, and it's something with which my T agrees.
We're not invited.
