numbness/pain at night, can't sleep.Dissociation/medical?

Postby dividedtruth89 » Mon Jan 23, 2012 7:31 pm

I have finally made a doctor's appointment about my arms. But now I wonder if it could be related to dissociation.

My arms go almost completely numb every night. There's horrendous pain that wakes me up, followed or accompanied by numbness in other regions of my forearms. If I move them around enough, the numbness/pain subsides, but about an hour later of sleep I wake up again with the same feeling. I'm not sleeping on them, and sometimes I'm just laying there and the numbness/pain starts up again without my even falling asleep, arms in normal position. I was thinking it could be carpal tunnel, because of the type of work I do, also the biking. But now I wonder if it could be dissociation related.

Has anyone ever experienced anything similar?

I also cut on both my forearms, but I don't think the cuts are deep enough to cause any nerve damage.

I have carpel tunnel and the symptoms are soooo uncomfortable. I am a receptionist and have it in both my hands, it's really hard to deal with. I too wake up throughout the whole night with my hands falling asleep and really bad nerve pain going up both my arms so you should look into that. I get confused sometimes which symptoms are related to dissociation and which aren't but I think it's always wise to check with your doctor so follow your gut. Sometimes for me the dissociation makes it hard to tell what's coming from where on my body but that nerve pain, it screams at me and I have no problem. So long as you have insurance I'd take advantage of that and get it checked out, they may be able to make you feel better so you can get a good night's sleep.

Honestly, it sounds more physical than related to dissociation. (This is purely my opinion - I'm hardly an expert...) I used to work in a coffee shop, and you wouldn't realize it, but working the espresso machines is hard on your wrists/arms. I developed carpal tunnel and had symptoms similar to what you are describing. The numbness, and bring woken up in pain. Wearing the special wrist guard thingies at night seemed to help...

I would definitely suggest consulting a doctor about it. At least they can accertain if it's medically related or not.

Thank you for sharing :) My worst fear was that I could have done some kind of nerve damage with the cutting, but I don't think it's possible.

Now if I can just get past my fear of going to a medical doctor...I hate it. I detest sitting in a room with one person with the door closed!!! And I don't want someone poking and prodding. Not to mention I'm afraid of the reactions to my cuts. :(

Most likely there won't be any poking or prodding, they will have you explain your symptoms and will tell you about the wristguards, like Brandic mentioned. I should get some of those to wear as well, I would like to sleep. Try not to worry too much about your appt. I have a Dr appt tommorow related to my weight gain and I'm really scared to but I'm trying not to worry too much.

I've had a history of severe cutting on my arms and whilst my skin is as numb as frost-bite it doesn't come on and off like what you are describing. I know what you are describing but I only get it when I sleep in a funny position such as with my arm up above my head or something ! Going to the doctors sounds like the best bet. Good Luck

I have experienced something similar, but it is only in my hands and wrists. I got checked out for carpal tunnel, tendinitis, arthritis, and ray nodes- it was none of these. Turns out it's psychosomatic. The wrist guards actually made it worse and sent me into a panic. Definitely have it checked out, but know that even the most physical of symptoms can be psychological in nature.

She had to look at my cuts and I didn't like it. :( I don't like going to the doctor cuz I don't like it when they put the thing on me to listen to my heart it makes me feel scared.

Nothing seemed to point to something physical, so I'm going for nerve testing :?

What kind of nerve testing are they doing, may I ask? I had a nerve conduction test done relating to nerve pain in my back and leg. And... well... it wasn't easy let me just say that. I think it's a good thing you're getting more testing done though. Hopefully the docs will be able to get to the bottom of it.

Yeah it's a nerve conduction test and EMG...uh oh is it painful?

Not like it really matters anyway. I seem to not be able to feel much when I'm in a doctor's office. She was asking me to do some basic movements to see if I had any pain, and I had none. But the second I left, the pain came back.

And I guess my hearing problem is mental . No probs with my ears, even though I said "what" like 5 times while there and I am constantly asking everyone to repeat themselves.

TRIGGER WARNING

On other stuff that seems to happen whenever I'm in someone's office...I guess it's not localized only to therapists. It seems that whenever I'm in an office with one person with the door closed, I get extremely sexually aroused. However, I don't realize this until AFTER I leave and go to the bathroom, if you know what I mean. I guess I'm so scared I get extremely disconnected from pain or other physical sensations.

I was thinking...MY GOSH how am I ever gonna survive when I go for my first pap smear? The doctor is gonna think I'm in to them!
