New Here (Parts + Addiction + DID)

Postby abbeylane » Wed Jul 27, 2011 4:52 am

Hey All,

I am new here. I was diagnosed with DID about six months ago and slowly but surely I am getting to know my system and learn about all of my wonderful and amazing parts. I am Bianca the host and I am very concerned about the system right now. I was never the controller (that was always left to Binks but she is currently on sabbatical)

One of my parts Isis is addicted to cocaine. She was forced to take it from the age of 12 (the body is 27 now) and she recently revealed this to our therapist. Now our therapist is really concerned and wants us to potentially go inpatient.

She really wants us to tell our doctor tomorrow. Our actual family doctor who we trust is on vacation and there is a substitute doctor right now. Do I just say to the substitute doctor who I just met last week: "Hi there, here is a letter from my therapist explaining my DID. One of our parts has an addiction to cocaine and our therapist wants to know what to do with the physical side of things. Is there anyway possible you can give some strategies?"

This feels bad to me and I feel guilty that I have not yet told my family doc. I am scared of the diagnosis and don't know what to do. I am just really confused all together about DID. Did any of you lovelies have similar experiences when first diagnosed?

Have any of you lovelies dealt with a part having an addiction? How did you deal with it? I just want to do the best by the system but I am new at this and confused on what the best thing to do is.

Hello Bianca. Welcome to this forum. You have lots of company here. Many people with DID have chemical addictions, and frequently the addiction is isolated in a specific part. Being open with your health care providers about your real issues is an important first step toward better health.

I don't have any experience of addictions, but if it was me, I would wait until my usual doctor came back. As long as the doc has only gone for a week or something, not like 2mths or whatever. It would be because I'd feel more comfortable telling a doc I already had a connection to, not because of feeling bad for not telling the usual doc first. I think that's irrelevant, it's a professional relationship and if you need a doctor they would expect you to use whoever is available, not wait for them to return. X
I feel like hiding.

In my experience only smoking, but yes in my experience that was possible. Cause it was only smoking, there wasn't much dealing to do really so i'm sorry i can't offer any good advice, but I did want to relate something. After integrating, my feelings about smoking are mixed - which makes sense.

Thank you all for your responses. I greatly appreciate you sharing your experiences.

I decided to tell the substitute doctor because my therapist encouraged it and it went relatively well.
