quick question about dissociative disorders

Postby illuminate.obscurity » Fri May 20, 2011 5:34 am

i forgot yesterday. i asked someone about it and they reminded me and i remembered. it was a hugh day, not your typical day. How could i forget it? i was diagnosis with did awhile back. After googling amnesia i realized the dissociative amnesia happens a lot more then not. i know that many other disorders can go along with did. example: borderline. but is it possible if someone has two different kinds of dissociative? or is part of did amnesia..is this typical?

Amnesia is a big part of DID. Traumatic memories and things that happen while another alter is out, are commonly not remembered.

Was it a stressful day? When something really stressful happens, I sometimes can't remember what it was, until I ask someone what happened.

I don't see why someone can't have more than one dissociative disorder. People who have DID already have memory loss, can have trouble with depersonalization/derealization, and lose time... those things are part of other dissociative disorders.

Amnesia is a symptom of several disorders. That does not mean that if you have amnesia you have several disorders. It does mean that amnesia alone is not enough to diagnose any one disorder. Disorders are collections of symptoms that tend to occur together in many different people, so that researchers think there exists a distinct underlying process, a reason for symptoms to occur together. Many mental health disorders on Axis I (trauma induced, including PTSD and all the dissociation disorders) and Axis II (personality disorders) are being redefined, meaning that symptoms are being added or removed from their definitions. An example is borderline personality disorder; some researchers want to remove the dissociative symptoms from the BPD definition, arguing those symptoms are not actually part of BPD, but at least one advocacy group wants to retain those symptoms and move BPD from Axis II to Axis I.

The formal definition of DID includes only dissociative identities. Almost (?) everyone with DID has additional dissociative symptoms, and at one time or another also PTSD, but all those other symptoms are not part of the DID definition. That does not mean we have DID plus other dissociative disorders; they are neatly defined so the patient gets at most only one diagnosis from within the dissociative disorders cluster.

Certain things trigger my alters, and what they do is generally their business. I have no control, and sometimes I get to see a flash of what they did, but generally, its just black.

When I know I'm gonna get laid, C.Nic takes over and doesn't "retreat" until everyone gets dressed again. So all sexual encounters go out the door. Thats pretty much the only example, other than that, we have a schedule to keep everyone happy. Zack gets after school, TK gets 15 minutes to go nuts, Zack gets to clean it up (He likes it for some reason), and C.Nic gets 7-8 PM to work on homework and Jokes. No idea how we work with the other alters, they never talk, or never actually work with us at all. They just kinda sit there.

The best thing is to keep some sort of agenda or something with you at all times. As an excuse, its for keeping notes at work. In reality, your keeping track of what time you switch. Its something I've been doing for about 2 years now, and it works great.

i have been keeping track of what i do each day.. moods switches etc. but the odd day i guess i dont. il go to write then see i didnt write anything for the previous day and wont remember, which is nothing new..im ok with that. My last lost day, i decided to ask a friend who i talked to everyday if we talked at all. he said yes of course about lots of stuff. i said mm like what? he goes u dont remember? he says i tanned all day first time i got to tan outside, been waiting for it all winter long ..went to a family picnic. Just freaked me out how i could forget such a day. As he was telling me, i started to recall somethings, remembering i got pretty stressed as well during one part of the picnic. Now that i think about it makes sense how did can have memory lose, just like some has additional dissociative symptoms. Haha i dont know why i was spazing before

Although most people who experience dissociative amnesia do not have DID, dissociative amnesia is almost required for a diagnosis of DID. I say almost because at the time of diagnosis some people with DID report only experiences of co-presence or co-consciousness. In my therapy intake session I reported episodes of co-presence and co-consciousness. Only later, after becoming aware of DID, did I realize (a) I had some recent short blocks of amnesia, and (b) the significance of having no memories whatsoever of early childhood.
