Adderall/Ritalin & DID

Postby quicksilver » Sat Jun 26, 2010 8:47 am

Ey there,
I was just wondering if anyone knew if there have been any issues with people with DID using a learning aid.
Switching multiple times throughout a study session has had an impact on my ability to do well in school....

ps
totally unrelated but i just found this link i thought i'd share
http://forum.psychlinks.ca/cbt-cognitiv ... rself.html
i thought it was helpful

I'm not sure how medication would work (it's never stopped switching for me, but I've
never taken ritalin or adderal)
but I do know that some schools will take precautions to help dissociators, such as
sticking them in the same classroom for the whole year. (Changes can cause switching,
which is why some therapists don't change anything in their room for people with DID)

I asked a teacher to watch out for me (I do remember asking, but nothing after that) because
I tended to fade off and I wanted to hear and learn, so he'd make a loud noise to snap me out of it
if he saw me staring off into the distance, but he did it discreetly, he'd kick a table or something
and then not call any attention to it. (He wouldn't say why he did it, and pretend he didn't do it, and
didn't draw any attention to me so that no one knew he was actually helping me out) It was good because
we ended up present in the classes.

There are different things you can do to make your school experience a little smoother. :)

Wow, it's great that he did that for you. It's so frustrating when you really want to listen, but can't  I wonder if anyone else noticed he was making more noise than he used to

Everyone totally noticed when he'd kick a desk or something, but he continued on like nothing happened.
Everyone laughed, and then when they saw he didn't react, it turned into nervous, confused laughter, then
they just shut up and forgot about it.

It was really great of him :D It really helped me get back to the present and focus.

This is a great idea. I'm going to get my friends to punch me in the shoulder or something when I dissocate socially.

But as far as school goes, I think it would be tough getting every teacher on board, especially since they change up every semester.

I finished school a long time ago. :)

I ended up copying lots of notes from people for when I zoned out,
but I really did love that teacher to bits :) Helped so much!
In some schools, they'll let you take a test in a separate room if you're known to dissociate
so that there are few distractions and you can concentrate on your test. They do the
same thing for learning disabilities.
Some teachers are good for helping you learn, one thing you can do is take a recorder to
the teacher's desk for during the lecture. Others don't really care.
My schooling was especially hard because it was school where I was abused, and so every time
I enter a school building I fade out.
That doesn't make it impossible though! I still made it through school :)
I would also go around double checking I got everything I needed to know from fellow students
and the teachers, and I'd keep a list of everything I needed to do, and everywhere I needed to go
throughout the day, so that if I got fuzzy I'd just need to check the list.

It's hard to go through school when you have DID but there are definitely things you can
do to make your courses easier! :D
Things aren't going to be easy but I have faith in you :)
