Mapping can be really hard. I still don't have a full map of my system.
My personal system is very large and very few are related to each other.
I write down their name (or the name I call them by, my boyfriend suggests I try to give
them more positive names than the ones I had for them) and whatever role they play.
Then, I try to write down what they seem to be holding or their hidden purpose
(What they're actually protecting).
My alters don't have a house they live in so they can be hard to find.
I list my own parts using the IFS system-
Managers
Firefighters
Exiles
Here's a quick explanation of the system and how it breaks down.
http://www.selfledsolutions.com/resources/aboutifs.htmlThis is a system used for everyone, even those without DID.
With DID, it gets a little more complicated because each of us has our own managers, firefighters and exiles.
Not to mention, we can change roles since we're working together as a family system.
So we have our own subcategories.
I then put a little slash in the middle of the page to show the 'parts' that are dissociated from me,
or are simply not mine.
There I list all my kids and adults that have developed their own way with DID.
I've only listed their names and roles under the IFS systems,
but not only do they work as a system in my body, they have their own subsystems for themselves
since they developed differently than me and are separate,
so it can get pretty confusing in here!
If this makes a little more sense,
I have my own managers, firefighters, and exiles,
F has his own managers, firefighters and exiles
S has her own managers, firefighters and exiles.
These are our subsystems.
But in my body, F plays the role of a manager, and S plays the role of a firefighter. This is our body's system.
It's a lot more complicated than that though, I have at least 20-30+ kids in here.. it gets crowded sometimes!
Thankfully, only three of us can be awake at a time. Usually, the same threes come out, that's how I determine
if they are related. Everyone's system is different. Like mine doesn't have a house!
It's a little complicated, but it can sure help you understand your system better and how everything works together!
Plus, it'll help you understand why everyone does the things they do and the best part is roles aren't unshakable-
F used to be a firefighter and S has been playing the role of a manager more often, there used to be a lot more
chaos in here before most of us started playing roles that helped instead of hindered.
However, like I said, everyone's system is different, so this type of map may not work for you.
Use what seems to fit with yours!
Good luck and I hope you get a good map of your system, it can really be handy in your recovery and helping everyone
work together
