With my mute alter, Qwentin, he first came out in front of my girlfriend and was using American Sign Language. I can hear him in my head now but he still can not speak at front. And I have no idea if anyone else inside can actually speak back and forth with him or not. And sometimes he signs to us regardless. He told my g/f that he had to be quiet so long (I'm guessing out of fear) that he's afraid to talk even though we tell him it's safe now.

As far as a purpose or function, he kept me safe when I was being abused. I look at kids differently, once the body grows up. I don't think they have a specific purpose now other than to be kids. And sometimes they need safe love and nurturing before they can really speak and serve a purpose if they do happen to have one.

Death of the self in a long, tearless night,
All natural shapes blazing unnatural light.

Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire.
My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,
Keeps buzzing at the sill. Which I is I?"

Well, even mutes have thoughts, so obviously they can inner talk.

Absorb pain without giving the torturer(s) the pleasure of hearing you scream. Thats what Freddy (now-dormant alter) did for me back in the day.
