Imposter Syndrome and DID

Postby Western » Sat Nov 18, 2023 4:32 pm

I'm just thinking whether imposter syndrome is something that is in any way associated with DID.

Its taken me a week or so to work this out and it started with me waking up in a cold sweat, panicking that the original self of our system had been killed or had died many years ago when she was a child and she had been replaced by someone else. This thought literally consumed a full morning the other day and then I realised that this thought was actually a metaphor for probably a host alter taking over at a very young age.

With this in mind I'm wondering whether this could be related to having imposter syndrome because I (the host) obviously feel literally like an imposter.

Tell me your thoughts on this please. Thank you in advance.

Imposter syndrom in any shape can be linked to anxiety, inadapted beliefs, and yes, also dissociation.

When you have trouble feeling connected to your abilities, memories, etc. some parts of your life, like your job, things you succeeded into, or just your life as a whole, can feel fake, underserved, or "not yours".

When you have DID, some aspect of your life are totally handled by other parts. When you think about those aspects that you don't usually deal with, they don't feel like "yours" at all, so it can make you feel like you shouldn't be here, have this job, have this house, etc.

If you have changed hosts in the past, it's normal that the "new one" has trouble feeling connected to this life. But this body is shared by you whole system, so your life is the life of the whole system. No one is an imposter here. Everyone is as real and valid as the others. Especially when it comes to changing hosts. If a swap happened, it was because the previous one couldn't handle your life anymore, and the new one is, in a way or another, more suitted for this role.
