Starting Over

I'm at University and my friends have encouraged me to see a therapist on campus. But we're all afraid to because its very hard for us to trust grown ups especially doctors.

Dunno what to do.
I'm all at sea
Where no one can bother me
Forgot my roots
If only for a day
Just me and my thoughts
Sailing far away...

I suggest seeing a therapist, it'd be good, you can trust them.
I can carry the whole weight of the world on myself and not have a problem, but as soon as I add my own, it's impossible.

Never know what you'll learn today - maybe something new. Did you know [insert traumatic experience] happened? Well today you had that flashback! Gee whiz, isn't life just WONDERFUL? :D

I used the on-campus therapy service last year at uni. It was nothing like my old therapist back home. But was good, I guess!

They probably won't be able to deal with something as complex as DID, since the most common things they have to deal with are students with general student-life problems, relationships and accommodation and so on. BUT - it is good, spesh since it's free :) And of course is totally confidential :)
-- So what then is this I?
Right now, as you read this, does it amount to anything more than a collection of thoughts and memories which are just transitory, and come and go in the mind like clouds in the sky? --

It is scary to see a therapist, and with what we have been through, it is hard to trust doctors, and grown-ups, and people who are supposed to help you because all we know is that they hurt us.
But here is the cool thing...
You now have the power.
You have the power to make choices, and say no, and get help if needed. If you start seeing a therapist and they just don't get it, or don't connect with you, you have the right and the power to ask for another one. It is a good decision to see a therapist, college can be tough as a singleton, first time away from home, and on your own, but as a multiple, multiply it by multiple times and you have multiple problems. I myself am registered with the Center on Disabilities at school and reap the benefits from it. I have note takers in class, extra time on tests, and private rooms for test taking, there are other great benefits as well, and I could not have gotten that help without the help of a therapist.
It is scary, I know, but I think it is well worth it, and don't settle for someone because it is who they placed you with or the first one you could see, make sure you are comfortable and that you can set goals with the therapist.
I hope this helps ease your anxiety a bit.
Good Luck.
Amber

Hi, Escape Artist. Sorry if I'm budding in, but I just wanted to say that if the therapist doesn't give you what you need and takes your problems lightly, you don't need them. A therapist is suposed to give you validation and support. You have your friends here and you can find a better therapist, like others have said. You are safe and free now. You can do what is best for you. And you can talk to us any time.

i agree, even if you don't like the therapist, you've got us. you said some safe grown ups were going to be there. they sound like another great safey net, or "back up" if the therapist doesn't work out. hopefully you'll find a good one.

i was lucky, i had great instructors. one of them was just like us. she was always there if i was having problems. i sure hope everything works out well with you too. keep in touch.

Thank you Mr. Bates for the rudeness, I have PMed you about it. ;)

I hope you have good luck and see a good one, I know some of them are real asses, but for the most part, they're good. :) They're trustable most of the time. Remember, there are laws about confidentiality, so if the therapist tells anyone GET THEIR ASSES IN COURT    Lol, sorry. Anyways.

Best of luck,
Crazy4fun [you know I am ;)]

Its not just confidentiality that is the problem with therapists Crazy.
It is the treatment, their own mental health issues, and their lack of knowledge, and the simple fact that they are human and make mistakes.
We are just lucky to have a therapist off the bat that we like and trust. I defintely would not go to anyone trusting open and willing to start telling them everything, even with the good therapy experiences I have had. Many will say they have experience with DID and then really only have heard about it in a Psych class.
There are many reasons to be wary and careful in choosing a long term therapist, but when you choose the right one, the benefits are well worth it!
