Different pain sensitivity?

Postby Muninn » Sat May 18, 2019 8:02 am

Is it possible that different alter don't have the same pain sensitivity, or do not experience the same kind of pain?

I noticed (again) because I suffer from bad back pain in the last few days (it even hurts with each breath). But Alea-Me doesn't notice this at all, when he was out in the last days. In reverse he suffers form a lot of heavy headache which I and others do not. We observed it more than once that even heavy headache can be disappear suddenly as soon as someone else is more present.

And then there it is this one alter who is experience pain as pleasure, who is craving to experience physical pain and seems to enjoy it. But if someone else is in the body again it is just normal unpleasant pain.

It is a strange thing, because the body is always the same and the nerves certainly will not change on an daily/hourly base

yes, quite common in fact.
that is often a big reason why DID was useful in the past. having parts who take the pain and others who cannot be touched by it, even those who adapt to it being mixed with physical arousal makes perfect sense.

Yes we all have different pain levels/tollerences/enjoyments, as well as different touch sensitivity/different weather tolerances or preferences. A good example is I enjoy cold weather and can't stand the heat, but Anime doesn't have a very good cold tolerance and is more okay with the heat.

Makes sense, that it can be a DID thing. Some of us are also emotional numb and some are there to contain specific emotions, probably because of emotional abuse in childhood.
But I guess, that the physical pain sensitivity thing is more of a side effect in our case, because there were no situations in which physical harm happened apart from some soft physical punishment.

After thinking more about this, I came to the conclusion that also singletons can have different levels of pain sensitivity and be less sensitive if there is a high adrenaline level or if they are distracted. And there are kinks which include pain, which does not have to mean that anything bad happened a long time ago.

Intensity of pain is a state of mind, not simply a reaction of nerve endings.
I'm not arguing; I'm explaining why I'm right.

Definitely.

The host in our system is quite sensitive to pain. All of the host alters in here have, in turn, been quite sensitive to pain. Sensory issues relating to autism, that sort of thing. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's been traumatic in many instances. It makes sense that some of us would break off with either a higher tolerance for pain or at the least, less of a response to it.

A few examples. The host's father figure/uncle, for instance, has such high pain tolerance he didn't notice a paper cut until nearly a full hour had passed. The host has difficulties with extreme heat and cold; my associate can withstand cold and often goes out in short-sleeved t-shirts. We have chronic pain (unsure as to what it is, precisely) and my husband often gets the brunt of it, especially when it affects our knees. We've thought about getting him a brace.

I'm unsure as to what my own pain tolerance is, and am averse to finding out.

DID/PTSD, autism.

Yes we all have differing pain tolerances. Purple Haze, has quite a high pain tolerance, as does myself and a few of the others. The little and the teens vary. Ború's is quite high compared to others in those age groups.

Purple Haze has got hand sewers fingers. The pads of the top of her fingers and thumb are hardy.

People who don't know that Purple Haze has DID, thinks that she has a high pain tolerance and are jealous of that.

I hope that makes sense? But, no, you are not alone.

Thanks for sharing your experiences :)

Yesterday we managed to voluntarily switch from one alter with nauseating headache to one with high pain tolerance and the headache was gone within seconds.

It was a really fascinating experience to see how dependent pain reception is of a state of mind.
It was also fascinating because it was only the 2nd time we managed to decide to switch and it actually worked.
