I have a younger alter that likes toys and video games. At (nearly) 50 it wouldn't be considered appropriate for us to play with baby toys so we buy them for the dog! Both our dogs could/can (one passed away now) complete simple shape sorting and stacking toys and like soft toys that crinkle and make noises. For us that seems to satisfy this need.

We play on video games alot as the parts of childhood when we liked to do this we remember but parents were strict as to how much time we could spend on them. Now we live alone, parents passed away years ago and don't see anyone for months (other than passing people say hi when we take the dog out) we pretty much do what we want all day everyday. At the minute Kit is hooked on Zelda (Switch - Breath of the Wild) and spends several hours a day on it and with a new one coming out this year I can't see much changing in the near future!

I used to live in a group home for a while so I feel your frustration at not having your own space to do what you want and having others (staff) controlling your daily activities and what you can and can't do.

How did you end up getting out?

Another alter kicked in that gave the impression to the carers that we were more capable. we were also quite sneaky. They were pressuring for us to go to college or something so we took a computer course so we had access to the internet (the home didn't have it or any computers back then Internet Home BB was still quite new and very expensive), we could then email the council and housing associations find out where offices were and visit when they were thought we were taking our weekly trip to the shopping centre!

Eventually we got offered a flat and took it just to get out. It was difficult at first but once I got my dog things were better.
