Books?

Postby Silentfornow » Thu Mar 21, 2019 6:05 pm

Are there any suggestions for me to learn about DID through books written for the client and not for the therapist? I'd like to read about it, but the internet has so much contradicting information....

a good start would be to use a search tool of your choice and find all the other threads on here that listed helpful books.
Dx: DID cPTSD

We have found these two to be helpful... and recommend AVOIDING one called "Got Parts?"

The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook
https://www.amazon.com/Dissociative-Identity-Disorder-Sourcebook-Sourcebooks/dp/0737303948/

Amongst Ourselves: A Self-Help Guide to Living with Dissociative Identity Disorder
https://www.amazon.com/Amongst-Ourselves-Self-Help-Dissociative-Identity/dp/1572241225/

You MIGHT get them cheaper on Half-Priced Books (HPB.com) website, but sometimes shipping costs make that savings on the book irrelevant... but worth a look. It's easier to search by ISBN which Amazon's listing will give you. :)

Hi,

We really liked

I Am More Than One: How Women with Dissociative Identity Disorder Have Found Success in Life and Work by Jane Hyman

Iain
Iain - 14, Colin - 17, Evan - 7, Cody - 16, & Host - the adult out front

When they say 'be yourself',
which one do they mean?

Is this very "women focused", or good for general DID people?

And is this the right book?

I just got that book, and was looking forward to reading it, but ended up skimming through it and not finding anything helpful. It seemed like the things she wrote about were either things I already knew, or they didn't apply to me. Maybe because I don't have as much amnesia for day-to-day stuff as those women. Also, I didn't really like the outsider approach--it seemed written by and for someone without DID, to destigmatize it and help people understand it. Which is great, but not what I need.

What did you like about it, Iain?

I agree with Zor's recommendation to avoid "Got Parts." But those other two sound good--I think I'll check them out.

Hi,

I think Host really like it because it was like he could have a good life anyway even if we're DID. It was about people having a life and doing things. I don't know if we learned anything about DID from it.

Seconding the Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook. We've got a copy of our own and even just flipping through it and skimming has been helpful/illuminating.
I can see you in my head again.

DID/PTSD, autism.
Body is in late 20s. 27 confirmed alters of all ages.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got the sourcebook, and while I learned some things from it, I found it to be a bit elementary. Is there anything more in depth? Maybe something for clinicians?

The best one I’ve read recently is The Haunted Self. It really normalized a lot of things for me that I had felt were my own personal weirdness, and explained a lot about the way I handle things and why.
