A few days ago a member of our system lost their memory. Technically, they wiped their own memory. They couldn't remember anything, including their own name. They were a complete blank slate.
I have been observing their behavior for the past few days, and I have noticed that they have changed a lot. They are still the same person, same smile, similar behavioral traits (instincts? I can't think of the right word) but the behaviors that are missing are the negative ones caused by what we went through.
They smile more, smile often in fact, where before it was rare to get even a half smile. They are not paranoid anymore, I would say they are trusting to a healthy degree. They can handle people touching them, where before a simple touch would often invite a violent or angry response. The anger is gone, the shame is gone, the self hatred and sabotaging actions are gone.
I'm amazed how much simply forgetting traumas can affect a person for the better. And how much simply being aware something happened can alter behavior and mood to such levels.

Those of us who still remember what happened, have not been affected by this member's amnesia, minus gaining a new perspective when co-conscious with them. It has provided us a very good compare and contrast scenario and I feel we have lots to learn from this.
