I am Bunaigh and I am 12 years old. I want to share our story. I guess it belongs to all of us but we each only 'lived' parts of it; she (the Mommy/Host/Kellie) lived it all. Our brother keeps reminding me that she needed us to do that but it doesn't always feel that way. Anyway here it goes...
Kellie's arrival into this world wasn't a good story from day one. Her mother had been married and already had three children, seems like she didn't have room for a fourth. Her marriage had fell apart, not sure of the details because the only person we have to hear the story from is Bertha (Kellie's mother) and you can't believe anything she says. Her father was married and had two daughters when Bertha and he met. He wasn't a good father either and everyone knew it. His daughters were bruised and hurt a lot. His name is Jim. Not sure how Bertha met Jim either; let's just leave it at she has a talent for find the scum; and the affair began. Soon after Jim and his family was ran out of our small town because he was caught having an affair with a 5th grader (Did I mention he and his wife were teachers?). Okay I know the word affair isn't fair to use because obviously he was abusing her too but I don't know what word to use there.
At the time Bertha was living with a man (who was also married) and his name was Arnie. Kellie was told that Arnie was her father. We don't remember a lot about Arnie, just that we wasn't comfortable around him but then again we were never comfortable around anyone. The clear memories we have of him is of him beating my oldest brother in the yard. Really beating him, not like spankings or anything. And a few others that involve butchering animals, cutting trees, etc. First we lived on Grandma's property in our little trailer, then we moved to Florida. When we came back from Florida, Arnie didn't live with us anymore. Grandma had moved our trailer to Norwood and we lived there. During this time Bertha got another boyfriend, his name was Tom. Tom was a horrible person and he was meaner than the devil himself. He would sneak into our room at night and do things to us. Some of us still can't stand the inside dark because of him. He used to lock us in the cellar for punishment and we'd spend days at a time in there. One time he killed our puppy and hung him in the cellar while we was locked in there. The cellar was a small little place dug into the ground with red clay floors in half of it because it hadn't been finished. And there was a small table in the corner that we'd crawl up on when we had to stay there so snakes couldn't reach us. We had several hallucinations in that cellar. Like the little girl in the corner that would just stare at us, she looked just like Kellie. Then the time he hung up the puppy in there we'd see it jump down and try to get on the table. Only it wasn't the sweet little puppy he really had been, he was vicious and trying to hurt us. He was mad because it was our fault he had to die.
As bad as the cellar was, it wasn't the worse punishment. The worst was the hole. The hole was in an old outhouse that was on the back of the property. Tom would put us down the hole inside of the outhouse for long periods of times because we made him want to touch us in bad places or any other thing we done wrong. Not that we knew the reason every time. The smell was horrible and it was hard to breath. It was hard to breath for days afterwards too. Tom would take Kellie to a gathering where a few adults would try to beat the devil out of her. Four or five adults would make her lie on a bed and they'd whip her bare skin with belts. They were convinced she spoke to demons because of her imaginary friends (which was the rest of us). Grandma hated Tom even tho she didn't know the things that he did to us. She finally told Bertha that if he didn't disappear from our lives, there would be consequences. We don't understand why but for some reason Grandma scared Bertha, maybe she knew secrets. Whatever reason, it worked and Tom was forever gone.
Then Arnie came back and then we lived with Arnie on his property until the summer after Kellie turned 8, then we moved into town. While living with Arnie, Kellie was still sent to a basement for punishment and her older brother had started to trying poke things into places where little girls shouldn't be touched. She felt like she had done something to deserve this. On her fifth birthday her brother tried to rape her but being so young himself it failed. But both of her brother were allowed to rule over her and her sister, Tina. Tina was the chore doer in the house. Everyday she'd come home from school and had to do the dishes, dust, take care of Kellie and Ray, and clean. Then she'd have to mow the yard when it was needed, help in the garden, and any other task Bertha could think of. Everything had to be just right or Tina was beat. There are many memories of Tina being dragged out of bed in the middle of the night to wash every dish in the house because Bertha found a dirty fork. Tina wasn't allowed to have friends over or to go to sleep overs or anything else. She went school and then came home.
After the move into town not a lot changed. Everything went how Ray and Paul wanted them to in the house, they were in charge. Bertha felt like neither of the two could do wrong. Even tho they seemed to hate each other, they were the kings. We know now that Ray hated Paul because he was being abused by him. But at least in town Kellie could get on her bike and be gone all day and into the night. Unlike Tina, Kellie had no rules at all. Then one day before her 13th birthday a stranger came up on the porch of their little trailer. Kellie was sitting outside with a little girl Bertha was babysitting at the time and thought nothing of a strange man coming to visit. But this man did a strange thing, he stopped and did a double take. As Bertha came outside he said “Damn that's my kid”. She ushered him inside as fast as she could. Kellie still didn't think too much of it, just thought he was another weirdo. Then she was called inside and introduced to her Dad. Confused as she's always had been told that Arnie was her father but hopeful because she had a Dad and he seemed to want her. Maybe this was her chance to be loved. It was planned that he would return the following day and take her for the weekend.
The weekend was spent in a hotel. What she got that weekend was not love, wasn't the happy ending she had wanted so much. It was a cruel punch of reality. I am pretty sure that's when she lost all hope for anything good. She was certain that she didn't deserve it. Jim started coming around a lot and every time she'd have to go somewhere with him and he'd touch her like no father ever should. Then she started to walk the long way home from school because from that way she could see his vehicle in the drive and not come home. But then he showed up early one Saturday morning with an offer she couldn't refuse... He had brought Josh, her little brother. Josh got out of the truck and ran to her. He hugged her neck (the first hug any of us ever remembering) and said “We are going to be friends forever, aren't we?”. Jim used him for bait every weekend and even tho Kellie knew what would happen she went with them, just for time with her little brother. I am pretty sure that was the first time any of us had any clue what love was like. One night when Kellie had successfully avoided any of his touches they stopped at a building. Jim said he had to run in for a few minutes and that Kellie was coming with him. Leaving Josh in the truck along Jim took Kellie inside and there she was raped for the first time.
Even with the rape, any time Jim came with Josh in tow, she went with them. Josh meant the world to her and she'd do anything to spend time with her brother. He seemed to love spending time with her too. Always with a hug and a smile. For a year Kellie endured this routine until something unexpected happened, her periods stopped and she started feeling sickly. An older friend had suggested that she was pregnant because she was also putting on weight. One night after Jim had his way, she told him that she thought she might be pregnant. He was pissed and yelled at her for letting herself get pregnant and called her a lot of bad names. He ripped Josh out of her arms and put him in the truck and drove off leaving Kellie 10 miles from town. She had to walk all the way back into town and she never got to see Josh again. (Well not completely true but that part of the story will come later.)
That's all I can do for now. I need to take a break so I don't overload.
(I did change the names of the outside people just in case but everything else is right on.)
