Problems with certain skills

Postby lifelongthing » Sat Mar 16, 2013 11:05 am

I was wondering, do any of you have any skills that you're just not able to understand? We're trying to sort our if this is some type of learning problem, dissociative problem, pstd issue or what have you.

This is kind of embarrassing but we (as in any of us) cannot understand (e.g we understand the concept, of course, but we cannot seem to learn the skill needed) any of the following (and possibly more)

* Left vs Right (this is pretty normal in my FOO - not a single woman in our FOO (the blood-line part) can tell the difference, though most of the men do just fine)
* Which month is which letter (e.g 01 is January 02 is February etc)
* Maps (at all - I still after years have absolutely no clue where on the map my home is even though I've tried to learn it many many times and I do not understand maps at all, not just "reading one")
* Measuring units (such as meters, deciliters etc - I have a set measure in my mind of what a meter is for instance, but it is completely ridiculous and things like deciliters etc I have no clue about - even though I've cooked and baked lots and tried very hard to learn it)
* The alphabet (and in here which letter is before another in it - so while we know A is before B (after a lot of practice  ) I can't tell you if R is before or after T)
* The multiplication table after the 5th minus the 9th that we do know)

We have always had very good spelling, English (nor our native language) was something that was difficult for us to learn but when something "clicked" we had no problem what-so-ever and after a short time was better at it than even our teacher, as she herself admitted and we have also never had much trouble with maths and enjoy it a lot. So there doesn't seem to be any type of dyslexia or dyscalculia or anything like that.

So yeah, just trying to make sense of everything :)

Aww, with the maps it's a bit funky! Sorry, made me melt

Yes, I absolutely agree with the notion to compare those skills that are problematic.

We cannot tell certain months apart and never know which follows which.
Names of some months.
We spell with an adrenaline rush- we cannot spell. Writing is okay, telling it is not.
Counting money feels like fainting. It's like some wonderland, did some disapear, did some appear, makes no sense! People do look strange every now and then...
Money topics are generally something we fade out of and cannot comprehend. One of us does, I think, she's in charge now most of the time so this is just a memory.
Measuring units: we can do that if we think slooowly. But we bypassed it with learning how to measure things in our own way, and for example cooking is funny. Some say I'm some magic cook in the kitchen because I never measure anything and it turns all crazy fun. Some explain us all the measurements all over again and of course we fade out.
Alphabet is funny with us, too.
Problems naming colors.

One of my teachers used to say: DON'T THINK ABOUT IT JUST DO IT. It worked with many school related skills.
Might be more, I don't remember now.

DOes it make your life harder, or do you take it as a bit of funny stuff?

Hehe thanks  :D

Yes sort of this too.

We don't know which season comes after which and we never know which follow which either (which ties into the whole not knowing if they are the 5th of 11th month etc).

DOes it make your life harder, or do you take it as a bit of funny stuff?

For the most part we just take it as a fun quirk we have, but some of it does make life harder and especially studies or work etc.

Trying to figure out if this is "a thing" or just us being weird really. To us, all those different informations we have written about seem to have some sort of "likeness" to them that makes us unable to process it properly and use said information  :)

I don't say it in a 'wanna make you uncomfomfy' way, but IMHO it is a weirdness. Because to me those 'problems' also seem related to each other and are small...uh...'disabilities'.

Sorry for all the quotemarks, I just don't want to make this so super serious. And I think saying that those are small disabilities is not really a demeaning thing, because those ARE quirks, too! Non?

Yes I think they are unique weirdnesses we can file under quirks. Until someone else comes with a great theory and I'll be all

Not at all - I wouldn't post about this if I didn't think it was something weird and/or something wrong. We had an ex who was dyslexic, when he describes how he experienced that it feels very similar to the things above that we can't seem to figure out. I'm sorry but I'm not understanding if you think it's "just a quirk" or some sort of "disability" (or both, of course).

Our IQ is fine so it's not that, so I don't know what's causing it or if it's just "a strange thing" that doesn't matter at all. Time will tell I guess. It's not something that worries me, but it does affect my work sometimes and it's something the SO and I have been talking about from time to time :)
