Finding Alters

I read a couple threads about it but I am not sure I entirely understand. How exactly do you search for alters?

Some appear.

I usually search relax let the walls down and whoever wants to speak does.
or I ask questions through the head like hi does anyone want to talk.

DO NOT CHASE OR HARASS!

Ask others do you know anyone who I haven't met who wants to talk or come out.

Go with vibes feelings go with a feeling whoever wants to be know will let themselves be found

maybe even write on a peice of paper

There are many different ways to search for alters, already listed in a thread I saw you had posted in. However, I am not sure how to make it any clearer to you, but I shall try.

1) You can try calling out loud for an alter, just as you would talk to yourself out loud. If you have a name, you can trying called that name. If you have a description of them only, you can try calling for them by that description.

2) You can try asking out loud if anyone else is there, or if anyone is hiding, or if anyone would like to come "out" or "forward".

3) You can try doing options 1 & 2 listed above inside your head, so thinking to yourself instead of talking out loud to yourself.

4) You can search for an alter in your inner world, if you have one or are able to. This means going inside the inner world and walking around, calling for the alter by name or description, etc., just as how you would look for a person in real life.

5) You can ask other alters to help you search for alters. You can ask them to look around the inner world if you have one, to call out for them by name or description, to call out a general "is anyone here" question, or to just keep an eye out for anything new or different.


It is important to realize, though, that some times one just has to wait. If an alter is not ready to be found or does not wish to be found, there is not really anything you can do, except to perhaps ask them to come out/forward and reassure them that you only want to help and such, but even then it would probably take some repetition and time before the alter came forward.

This stuffs harder than I thought... I guess I am also forgetting that just because I am searching for another Alter doesn't mean I will find one. If there isn't one to be found I won't find one. But if there is... I guess only time will tell. Thank you very much, Rain.

I can definitely feel someone out there. Its like looking out a very dark window in the middle of the night, and not acutally seeing anything in particular. Like when your mind plays tricks on you and makes you think you can see shapes and shadows moving across the yard. But when you turn the lights on, or flash a flashlight across the yard no one is there. Its like that kinda. I can feel it, but I can't see it. I can hear something, but no one is there.

Keep in mind that many alters feel as if they need to hide, or like to hide, or think they should hide. It will take some time before they realize that you being aware of them and knowing them is safe and ok, that they are safe and ok to come out/forward, and that their environment is safe and ok. Even if you reassure them or yourself, it may take a bit before they start to believe your reassurances. Also remember that alters might not want to be found as well. In a lot of cases, introjects and abusive alters are the most common alters that don't want to be found, and they can evade detection and discovery. But there could also be alters who are stuck in trauma, or hiding due to fear, or other similar things. And then of course, as you said, if there are no alters to be found, then none will be found. Time will certainly tell, though. And just in case, you could always see if you can search for anyone knew, or reassure anyone who might possibly be listening, or other things like that.

Best of luck with everything. Do not be too hard on yourself, though. These answers will not come to you all at once, so do not expect yourself to learn everything all at once.

I can imagine that it will take a quite a while of working at it. I'm sure even those who have worked at it for years still learn something new all the time.

There are plenty of people here who have been trying to understand everything for years and I've not met anyone who knows everything Everything takes time and there's always more to learn and understand.
