Being taken seriously

Postby lifelongthing » Wed Jan 23, 2013 6:18 pm

Hi, we just wanted to share with you something from our week.

*trigger warning for abuse, talk of doctor's, torture etc*
We have had severe trauma. Physical trauma. Trauma that leaves no room for doubt that the possibility of physical injuries that do not heal and go away on their own is very much present. Injuries that obviously did not heal and go away on their own.

1 time have we been taking seriously by a doctor. She, unfortunately, wasn't available to be our GP.

This week, we saw a new doctor (not a GP). We were just going in with our SO but he seemed a great doctor (and coming from us, this is huge - we have a great fear of doctor's). We told her we should book an appointment with him, and he overheard and said he could take a look right now. After a couple of minutes of testing he could show us, on paper, 4 things wrong. He was respectful, open, not phased and very comfortable to be around. For a male doctor, or any doctor, or really anyone - this is pretty huge. Upon getting questions from us about different trauma and what he could test for etc he asked us about our trauma history. He outright said "So you have a difficult background?". We responded that yes, we have a torture background. He was not phased by this and said people can come to him with few traumas, lots of traumas, no matter what the trauma (physical abuse or car crashes or anything at all) he would help them. He took some x-rays and told us to come back the following day. We came in and he was excited to see us, went over the x-rays and showed us what was wrong with us (due to injuries).

He took us seriously. He mentioned that trauma can get stuck in the body, but he didn't put everything on that. He acknowledged that our history is full of trauma and as such, our body has been through a lot that it can't repair on its own.

We have never, not once, felt this acknowledged.
The minute a doctor sees the PTSD signs, the dissociation or hears about our background we have been dismissed without a thought.
I hope you can all find someone to take you seriously on your journey to healing.

Thank you.

I think he will actually. We started treatment for certain things today and while it doesn't feel better yet (of course), emotionally it's helped so much I can't even tell you.

It's amazing what being taken seriously by one person can do to heal the pain of all the others that haven't :)

Thank you :) I hope you do too :)

Now I just have to find a GP & a T that is respectful too :P But honestly, I feel like just having that one person that's actually taken me seriously, has healed a lot of the feelings of "never having that".

Best of luck to you :)

im not multiple, but I get it man. Most of you at one point in time were victims of an invisible abuser ,an abuser the rest of the world could not see. So they make the very damage caused by another person- your fault. I was with a multiple for three years and got a good taste of what its like.
