DID in the media (Books, movies, games)

Postby Dom the Singleton » Tue Jan 22, 2013 9:31 am

Hello all! BDD here, I'm new around here, and I am a singleton (I believe that is the correct terminology for me), but I am in a very serious relationship with the user you know as "Mae The First (well with Elyse at least... hey, that rhymed! ....It's late, excuse me)

Anyway, ramblings aside, I always wanted to know what your community's take on DID was with the way it's portrayed in the media. I'm sure the first thing people say when you talk about DID is "You mean like Tyler Durden?", which while yes, technically Edward Norton's character would be diagnosed with DID, it's a very, VERY basic and rudimentary take on multiple personalities.

Then of course we have the more recent "United States of Tara"(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1001482/), which is (in my opinion), a more sincere portrayal, but no less dramatic than Fight Club (well, maybe a little, there are no acts of domestic terrorism in it). My significant other likes the show, but she also thinks it's pretty over the top, what do you all think?

But no other piece of work comes close to matching the straight up insanity of the game "Killer 7" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_7. This game might be offensive to some of you, but if you're looking for a surreal, unique game, with VERY mild DID overtones, I reccomend tracking it down for the GameCube

If I in anyway offended anyone, please let me know, I'm still pretty new to this, I will make mistakes.

See you all Later!

Overall, we liked the United States of Tara. Yes, there was a lot of drama, and yes that's usually a more severe case of DID, but we loved how it touched on the amnesia, and touched on the issues of people doubting her and not believing her, and showed just how crazy it can get because we have certainly had levels of drama and chaos to that extent in our lives before. We didn't like how it showed parenting aspects or how it showed legal aspects (*Spoiler alert: like when an alter of Tara's wreaks havoc in a spa, there definitely would've been some reports filed and that situation would've been looked into and such*). But otherwise, we thought it did a decent job showing the aspects of DID and how hard it can be for the person with DID and for the people in their lives (through no fault of anyone's, of course).

We haven't heard of the video game you mentioned.

For media in general, however, we hate how DID is portrayed. Fight Club is a good example of a good movie, but one that should NEVER be brought up as an example for DID (especially with how little it actually touches on it and how it pretty much doesn't explain a d@mn thing).

We liked the movie Sybill when we first saw it, but now we've started to hate it because everyone looks at that and expects every DID case to be like Sybill, when obviously, that's not going to happen. (We're worried that the United States of Tara will turn into something similar like this. We hope that people can realize by now that these are extreme cases, or that it's simply Hollywood, or that they shouldn't trust a movie unless it's a documentary for facts, but we probably hope in vain).

One movie that never meant to touch on the subject of DID but kinda did for us was Multiplicity, starring Michael Keaton. It's a romantic comedy (more comedy than romance, we don't really like romance movies or "chick flicks") that deals with cloning, and every clone ends up being more like a certain part of his personality (we don't think this was really planned in the sense of representing DID, but it actually does it kinda well and we liked it a lot). Like, one clone is arrogant, another clone is sensitive, and things like that. It's really funny and a good movie in general, but it made it better to realize the unintentional similarities between it and DID.

I have not seen any of those, but I did catch this pilot the other day.

I like they call it DID on the show instead of MPD. I also like they use the fact that alters can have different physiology - the glucose machine.

The problem is the day and night thing. They show one just 2 alters that switch at the same time every day.

I was actually about to post about that show, apparently, not only was it a bad representation of DID, it was a bad show altogether. it's now been cancelled after 2 episodes. Hopefully another show will come along that could better educate the masses about DID and not spread stereotypes like the Jekyll and Hyde dynamic.
