I get you. Ranks are just the different roles they play. If it's like levels, then you have different groups of alters that kinda stick together, these groups are decided by those roles.

I have two levels. We aren't divided by role and they don't mirror one another. For us, we're divided based more on the way we think. There are different rules in each level.

For example, me and Jen (who happen to also be the main hosts) stay on the first level, because we are very concrete thinkers. In our layer, we have a hallway, doors to our rooms, and we walk everywhere we go. Also, since we are the only main hosts, switching is very concrete too.

However LEll, Teen, and the little one are on the second level. They can reach both levels, where Jen and I can only reach the first level. When LEll first showed up (my first sign that there was something beyond my first layer), she started by breaking the most basic rule with Jen and me - switching is black-and-white. LEll was co-hosting. Jen tried to deny her existence as long as it was possible. We soon found that her entire layer was that way - more laid back. What was, was. They didn't talk with words, they talked with emotions and concepts. They don't really walk anywhere, they just kinda teleport everywhere. It was kind of an eye opener to see them and the way they work. It really shocked us when we found that Teen could actually create more space in her layer - she set up a playground that LEll and the little one could reach even when she wasn't there. But she couldn't create it on our layer, only on hers, so Jen and I cannot reach it. I did manage to get to LElly's room once. I think the only thing keeping us off of their layer is that we can't really accept their rules. It's hard for us to wrap our minds around.
Jess - F, main host, 17-20.
Jen - F, Spirit, 2nd host, 23.
LEll (pronounced "Elle") - F, 6-7.
Teen - F, Caretaker, 14.
Little One - Mute, Nongender, 3.
James (Jay) - M, Twin, 13-16.
Janice - F, Twin, 13-16.
Introject - M?, Silhouette/Shadow.
Katie - F, 9-12.
??? - F, 17-30?.
??? - M.
??? - M?, 15-17?.
Image - F, Fey.
??? - F.

Yup :)

Neat to read about your system. It's kinda amazing how everyone has their own little world inside their head and getting to know how it all works.

Sometimes DID just feels like holding up two kaleidoscopes at once (outside and inside world) and trying to make out what each of it is and how it works when nothing really makes sense. But that's just me

We don't really have levels, but more like ranks, or rather jobs. Everyone has some kind of general 'job' and we used that to make some groups. Everyone is just as important as everyone else because everyone has their own important jobs. I also think someone who picks up garbage is just as important as a president, even though they would be at the bottom of the social hierarchy, they make sure the cities are clean.

There are actually two kinds of classifications, the first one is a general classification that decides where your house in the treehouse-city will be. The second one is based on the tasks you have.

At first we have what we call a council, you can compare it to the politics of the outer world. These alters discuss things on both the inside and the outside. Their homes are located in the center of the city, with bridges running towards every part of the outer rings. The second group is called the caring-group, their homes are in the inner ring. The third group is the protection, they have the outer ring of the city in case there are problems caused by the forth group. That one is called the Dangers, who have their own place outside of the city.

The four groups are mostly based on the jobs. To start with the council, we have Florette and Claire as the most important alters, we used to call them fronters because they did a lot on the outside, but we changed it to Managers. They make sure everything inside the system will be the way it should.
Second we have the Controllers, they make sure everything on the outside stays fine. They will only act if something dangerous is happening. They are 3 alters you can see as the head of three of the four jobs within the protection group: Fighters, Runners and Forgetters. What makes these three special is that they are the best of their job and they are able to make us look normal, something the other protectors can't. The forth protection group, Analysts, doesn't have a controller since non of them can look very normal.
The third group within the council are Emotional Artists (EA), they use art to express our problems if those problems are too hard to talk about.

The second group, caring, contains the Caretakers and the Littles. Caretakers are a bit like ISHs, but they only take on the smaller things like nervousness. They don't help alters with big problems. They also take care of the Littles.
The Littles are every alter that is 14 years old or younger. They are within the caring-group because they can't take care of themselves yet. Angel is the only one whose age can go above 14 (she is 7, 12 or 19), but she agreed to stay with the littles even if she is 19.

The third group are protectors, alters who handle the physical and mental safety. We have Fighters who handle moments we have to fight, Runners who handle things we need to run away from, Forgetters who handle things that are emotionally too hard to handle (they make sure the others don't have to know what happened during that moment) an Analysts, who try to see what is happening in te environment. The only runner is Cella, who escapes by climbing. The other one is Mike but since he is the fastest while using the body and he can look very normal, he is a controller. Destiny used to be a fighter due to her knowledge of the human body, but her primary task is handling a certain kind of emotion, so she became a Forgetter.

At last we have the Dangers, alters who have not been assigned to a job due to the way they behave on the inside or the outside, like being very agressive. Jasmine has been a Danger for a long time, but she noww became an analyst. Emily has been a Danger too, she now is a Forgetter, she handles tough, offensive conversations.

Fragments don't have any groups, they also have no home since they don't want to, they seem to prefer being alone.
We are no longer here
