EFT (tapping) therapy?

Postby skotcha » Thu Nov 29, 2012 9:41 am

My T has been trying a new thing called EFT (believe it stands for emotional freedom technique?) it is commonly known as "tapping". I'm new to the theory but it's something about tapping on specific accupressure spots, while feeling somatic feelings attached to traumatic memories. It quite rythmic and has a quite specific method that the T goes through. She compares the results of this to EMDR (which I haven't had) to be honest it all feels like hippy B.S to me... :? Has anyone else heard of/ tried this for DID / trauma memories?

We've tried it. Personally, I don't like it and really freak out over being touched repeatedly in the same place. However, if that's not an issue for you, I would give it a try. It is very hippieish, and I did feel very silly when I did it. My T compared it to taking an idea that you want to consider or do, and implanting it into yourself for later. If I recall, what we did was the idea of actively going to sleep and staying asleep and used the EFT to suggest that staying asleep would be okay and that no matter what, I would sleep well. She never once said anything to me about the suggestion that it could be used for traumatic memories though. For me, it didn't seem to do that much, but my T swears by it and I do respect her.

That sounds kind of unpleasant to me. I don't think I'd like to be touched by my therapist in that way, I think it would stress me out.

Is it having any effect for you so far?
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.

Used it all the time, in the therapists office and outside... Works miracles if your willing to use it all the time and make it a part of your everyday life..

It trains you to come back to reality and not dissociate. You start to learn to use it all the time, thus, training your brian into new pathways to the outside world.

It works great as long as you use it religiously .

In addition I write with my left hand, asking alters questions, and I write resentment work with my left hand...

Anything works if your willing to make it a part of your life..

O, it's actually you who does the tapping. Not the T. EMDR is more likely to have the T tapping you than EFT.

Many therapy techniques use rhythmic bilateral physical stimulation. "Tapping" sometimes means holding two small vibrators, one in each hand, that buzz alternately. Sometimes it means crossing your arms and tapping your shoulders with your own hands. Sometimes it means your therapist touches your knees or the backs of your hands. Probably there are other meanings in use. What exactly is your T wanting to do?

hi there, thanks for the responses, im sory i didnt explain it very well. I tap on myself, its in specific spots like the top of head, the eyebrow, under the eye, temple, edge of the hand, side of torso...there are a few more but i cant remember them all. My T NEVER touches me, she did one time touch my leg when i dissociated and i jumped 10 feet and she promised to never touch me again. anyways it does feel very hippyish to me but maybe it is something that takes a lot more practice... or maybe i just cant do it right! Its not doing anything that i can see... I trust my T but i dont think i'll keep persuing the tapping

I've used it on certain spots on my face to reduce anxiety, as taught to me by my old therapist in an attempt to lessen the number of panic attacks I was having at the time. It definitely works for me for that purpose, but I've never heard of it used for trauma.

Self touch is a powerful method of grounding that is often very helpful for reducing dissociative symptoms. Trauma and dissociation are tightly linked, which is why self touch has a place in therapy for trauma.

I presume the "EFT" in the thread title refers to Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Re: EFT (tapping) therapy?

Postby quadretto » Mon Dec 17, 2012 8:08 pm

I tried EFT tapping in my therapy last spring. First, I was enthusiastic... but then it started to feel more and more ridiculous to repeat the thought: "Even though I have this [put your problem here],

I deeply and completely accept myself."

I mean, it started to sound so funny. ME...accepting myself. Ha-ha-ha
(Repeating a thought that was so opposite to my feelings to myself.)

Then, after one session, I got a response from my head screaming endlessly: "You are a bad person!!! Bad Person!!! BAD! BAD! BAD!...and so on" for a couple of hours.
And that was the end of ETF for me.
I'm 48 years old. Being in trauma psychotherapy for 2 years, learned that I have DID, maybe close to DDNOS. Some child parts, persecutors, etc.
