music in my head

Postby dianezz » Wed Nov 28, 2012 10:31 pm

I jsut wondered if anyone else has this issue. As far back as I remember as an adult..I am 49(host), I hear music all day and i dream in it. I wake up in the morning an d it can be extremely loud or fairly soft. This occurs even if I am having nightmares. During the day it also is sometimes loud and othertimes the others drown it out with their commotion( sometimes it is simultaneous music & talking). The music has a full range of solo singers to full choirs or entire orchestras.I am not always familar w ith the songs. I have a part that is a very musical and she is able to turn up the volume sometimes when stressed to protect the ones she is in charge of. She doesnt seem to fully realize that is not helpful to the rest of us. I do not know if she is where all this music originates. She claims she does not pipe in all this music.I believe her. She can however play most any melody on the piano after hearing it even if from years ago. She came out of hiding last year and plays a lot of piano of which most of us enjoy that time with her. Some of us turn on our ipod or speakers and that cancels out the other music..not jsut cover it up. I dunno , I am curious.

Yes. Many non DID people have this too. I think it's a gift. We have it too, and like you, we also use it to attempt to protect, or distract. We also listen to real music to stop the music inside.
I wish I could recreate or at least understand the complex creations we sometimes wake up to.
Have you ever heard more than one song at the same time? I'm curious too.

OH! theCollective, thank you for responding. Finally I found someone who has this deal. I actually did think it may not be a DID thing, but didnt know. YEP more than one song can be present. Just like i can hear discussions from our innerworld and the outer world while i hear the music all at one time.

Same here! When something stressful happens, music gets louder inside for sure. People with anxiety can have this too, but it is common to have lots of anxiety symptoms with DID. I have a room with a music box inside that I can see when the music gets loud. The mechanism seems to be as such for us: stress-->music volume increases-->dissociation begins, some sort of yield point of stress is reached-->other part takes over. I think I have two parts that are twins- One is homosexual and one is a huge metal music fan. I think this pair are the ones responsible for the music, but I can't say for sure.

**Trigger** I remember my face buried in a couch pillow as something really really bad happened. I was able to dissociated and kept the mind busy by thinking about everything the color/texture/smell of that couch pillow meant. Or other times I would use everything I had to make a song as loud as possible in my head to block out what was happening.

More or less the same thing happens for us, except the song has to have been heard at some point by someone in the system. The one hearing it doesn't have to have heard it before though. The volume can get really loud and we too try to cover it up or cancel it out by listening to music on the outside. It can get very tiresome, but I think it's a gift as well. Usually no one understands when we talk about having a song stuck in our head, but not like just stuck there - it's actually playing.

We have music play in our head often also. It's also generally background to other stuff going on in our head. We used to always think it was just like songs playing in our head while we were doing stuff or getting stressed etc but eventually we started listening to the actual songs and realised that the lyrics of the songs are actually a form of communication of something to us from parts that we wouldn't otherwise be aware of. So if we listen closely, we can catch the lyrics and hence the meaning of what is trying to be said to us by other parts. Like "no more drama in my life" or the phrase "walk on by" as we hit the junk food isle of the supermarket.
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.

Yea me too, except I can't keep up with all of that when it gets busy or when the music is more interesting than the outside conversations. Also my inners use music a lot to block me from hearing what they are talking about. Sometimes inners express themselves with music or lyrics too, like Salted Lipstick. I think it's really cool that this is possible and that it happens like this.

interesting ...I will have to see if I can catch the lyrics. A bunch of the songs I do know aready from hearing them in the outerworld. I also have plenty of songs without lyrics...usually with large bands and orchestras . Thanks

I've noticed that too! It's like the part is the DJ choosing the songs haha! I haven't ever really put any thought into what caused the song to switch, but it always seems to be topical. I'm going to pay attention to this now.
