*Trigger warning* Herschel Walker

I don't know if there has been a topic about this, but I think this is what people need to think about when they hear DID. Not Jekyll and Hyde, not Sybil, but Herschel Walker. That way people might get a better view of what DID can actually mean to someone who has it. (at least that's how I see it)

I love the way he descibes it, DID doesn't have to be something bad, it can also be something good. Maybe it is more like something extremely annoying for most of the people with DID, but I believe that as long as you keep trying to make the best of it, it can be something good (with the required downsides, though).

I don't know if Walker really got DID, but I also don't care, I like the way it's descibed :D He's doing effort to put DID in more positive daylight, and I'd hug and kiss him just because he's doing that.

One of the comments says: "you don't have to be like Sybil and have different names and accents, you just have to have different "modes". Its like logging into windows with a different account, its the same computer but all the settings are separate."
I'm gonna use that from now on

That's really cool.
Thanks for posting.

He seems really humble to be sticking up for himself and D.I.D in general.
Funny how the 'singletons' are freaked out and mystified by it, as I was at first, but now it makes perfect sense.

Of course he has DID. He probably has access to some of the best T's out there.

I adore this man! Both for his football and his honesty about his DID.

I've read a little about him. I think there's a book on him at my library, I've been meaning to get it.

The thought of DID being good reminds me of what my therapist said today: think of DID as a gift.

I've actually been reading his book. It's very interesting, and DID is very much a part of his life. I like how he talks about it as something that helped him. So far, I've never felt like he resented having it or was ingratful for any of his alters. I like how he's weaved it in and out of his life. I'm still not finished with it, but I'll definitely continue it.

Herschel Walker's book mentioned here is the memoir Breaking Free: My Life with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Why does anyone even ask if he "really" has DID? DID is not rare and the parts of the story about DID are not at all unusual. His sports career is far more notable.

As a DID memoir it doesn't get into much of the details of DID as a subjective experience, nor the impact on his significant others.

Herschel Walker military tour

Postby Una+ » Wed Nov 27, 2013 5:47 pm

For a couple of years now Hershel Walker has been doing an extended tour of United States military bases, talking to service men and women and their families about his story, in particular his DID. As an American football star, he has tremendous name recognition and credibility, and his story is one of hope. He is without question high functioning and very successful.

Here is a new article about his visit to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina: News: Herschel Walker shares personal struggle

Last month Hershel Walker visited Fort Knox in Kentucky USA, where a local TV station posted a brief news story and a clip from an interview with Walker. Here is the news anchor's text:
Former football great and Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker was in Louisville on Friday to discuss mental health.

Walker, who is the author of Breaking Free, suffers from dissociative identity disorder, or multiple personalities.

He said at first he denied he had any issues, but soon realized he had a lot of anger, often times for no reason.

When he first began to talk about it, he said the NFL backed away and so did many others because mental health issues were taboo.

Walker said by sharing what happened to him in his book, with complete honesty, he was set free, and others were as well.

He was at Fort Knox on Thursday speaking to soldiers and Friday he spoke at Brook Hospitals in Louisville.

He said no one should feel shame about mental illness.

I stumbled upon Herschel's book a few months back in an article about celebrities/famous people with DID (list also included Roseanne Barr, Adam Duritz, Courtney Love, Marylyn Monroe & Britany Spears). I am not an avid reader but was extremely intrigued he had written a book. I picked up a copy for one cent on Amazon and and am on the last chapter of "Breaking Free: My Life with Dissociative Identity Disorder" right now.

Hershel writes in clear, down to earth language. The book is from HIS perspective, about HIS life. It strays now and then into unrelated talk about football but doesn't get tangled up in all the theory behind the condition. The presentation of the balance of the positive and negative effects DID has played in his life rings very to true my own experience.

Please be forewarned if you decide to read the book. Being much further along in his own recovery, Herschel described ideas I am just now beginning to understand about me and my System. I was repeatedly triggered learning things that were undeniably true about me that my System was not ready for me to know. The effect this had on me was compounded by reading 9 of the 10 chapters in two sittings a few days apart. There is waaay too much to digest in this book for someone with DID to read so quickly.

I strongly recommend the book to those with DID, supporters of those with DID and anyone interested in learning about DID.
Never let the chance to do something nice slip through your fingers
