ZOLFT and DEPRESSION PLEASE HELP

Postby JER06 » Mon Aug 08, 2005 9:09 pm

I have recently been put on zoloft after I described to my doctor how I feel and so on. Basically anxiety and mood problems. He didnt think I was BI-POLAR and gave me the zoloft and a appointment to come back in 3 weeks. He seemed like he cared and all , but didnt seem like he wanted to know everything that was going on , just a real quick appointment in general. Anyways, after taking the zoloft for just 2 days , it made me think that it was going to help me a lot and be a mirricle drug for me. Durring the first 4-5 days on it I felt semi-manic a few times , but it didnt seem to extreme because it was better then feeling ill and depressed. I have had some side affects with muscle twitching and loose stool. I have been on it for 3 weeks and I take 50 mg a day and it seems like the more I take , the less it works. I know that this type of drug is a ssri and takes 3-6 weeks to start working , but I felt them work withen the first 2 days and like I said it seems like they work less and less every time I take them which Is everyday like Im suppose to . When I see my doc in 2 days Im going to explain this to him and tell him I still get anxiety , negitive thoughts about myself and life and still have insomnia. The zoloft seems to make me less extreme and more social but I still have no motivation and still feel like Im nobody. I want to see a specialist so I can get a diagnoses but all psychiatrist are booked for 6 months in the area that I live in and even if I waited six monthes then most of them dont take the insurance I have. If there is anyone out there with some advice or comments about my situation then I would love to hear what you have to say.

I think that i might have borderline personallity disorder or is it just anxiety and depression. One more thing is sometimes not all the time I have a running commentery of thoughts in my head about what Im doing or thinking and I over analyze everything. I cant distinguish if they are just racing thoughts or voices. Whatever they are I know there comming from in my head and I believe they are just thoughts not voices. I dont know whats wrong with me but I want to live and be happy and explore life to the fullest but I am LOST. PLEASE ANY HELP!

I was on Zoloft for 8 yrs and I don't believe I had symptoms or side effects like that. Doesn't mean that it isn't a side effect. You've only been on it for 2 days, so if you are really worried about it talk to your pharmacist or your family doc.

Ooops, sorry, I must have read that wrong.
I'd give it 3 more weeks, I think it took me 6 weeks in total to have 0 side effects....

JER06,

I have had a very similar response to a number of the SSRI antidepressants. I know they are suppose to take a good 3 weeks to work, but I seemed to improve very soon after taking them too. Pdoc used to tell me was a placebo effect. But this has happened to me many times when I've tried different antidepressants. I have found that after 8 weeks that I was back to square one. The semi-manic feeling is a side effect. If you have alot of anxiety, then you might want to try paxil. You will have to be patient with antidepressants as people can experience a myriad of side effects. They will wear off after awhile. Do you have trouble sleeping? Some antidepressants tend to be more sedating and better for sleeping than others. I'm wondering why he chose to prescribe you zoloft rather than another antidepressant? It's one of the older SSRI meds. Some antidepressants are known to cause weight gain as a side effect, like Prozac and Remeron.

Paxil made me extremely groggy and did nothing to improve my mood. However, I know of 2 people who have had great results with Paxil. It works well for anxiety.

Hope this helps.

Sometimes, an antidepressant will work for awhile and then stop. Then a different antidepressant will be used and then it may stop working too. Sometimes, the first antidepressant can be reintroduced and if will be effective again. Otherwise, you can go to a 3rd one.

I also think that you recognize that it is important that you have someone in which to discuss your situation with. I would really try to push your dr into referring you to a psychiatrist. Sometimes, you can work yourself in to see a psychiatrist by taking cancellations. Maybe if you saw a social worker in a hospital for a time he/she might be able to facilitate you getting to see a psychiatrist sooner.

Me too.

I think this is more common than not with general practioners (i.e. non-specialists).

Me too. And night sweats (i.e. wake up drenched in perspiration).

I feel this way too.

That sucks. Do whatever you can to get to a psychiatrist. Tell them to put you on their "cancellation" list (i.e. when another patient cancels their appointment, they call you to see if you want it) - that should increase your chances of getting in sooner.

antidepressants

Postby Tesla » Wed Dec 14, 2005 12:56 am

I started with Anafranil 1993, for a year, then Seroxat for another couple of years. Have been on Zoloft since 1996, no sideeffects worth mentioning.
However, I am beginning to wonder whether the effect "fades out" over time. I take 75mg/day but I don't feel as I would like. Sometimes suicidal thoughts.
