Im really worried about my friend

Postby Emma25 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 10:26 pm

Hello all,
I went to see my friend today she was sectioned 5 weeks ago and i was really upset at how she was, she was saying that she had been raped and the staff have been hitting her and i really didnt know how to handle it, i dont know whether its the medication they are giving her but shes worse than before she went in!

they have told her to expect to be in for 6 months and shes just getting worse, she was telling me today how they have been taking eggs from her ovaries and balming her?

How do i handle this? do i just agree with what shes saying or what? i hate seeing my strong friend like this its awful, is it the medication? if so why does she seem worse?
shes having tablets in the day and she said they inject her in the evening, shes run away from the ward once and the police were sent to search for her, im so worried.

Hello,
this must be an incredibly worrying problem for you. All I can say is that sometimes in order for people with mental illness to get better they get worse whilst doctors search for the appropriate course of drug treatment. Sometimes certain medication can cause hallucinations and symptoms which are associated with other illness, these can cause an individuals mental state to be altered and result in them becoming paranoid or claiming things that are not real. Of course you are in a difficult position in not knowing what is actually happening, so my advice would be to talk to her doctors to find out what form of medication she is on (sometimes there is a confidentiality issue so doctors may be resistent, so maybe ask for type not dosage, only if they are being difficult of course!) this will help you better understand what your friend is going through. In order to put your mind at ease with these claims of physical violence and rape you could ask her to see bruises or marks as physical evidence will give you a basis of whether to investigate this issue in detail (i.e. take it to the authorities) for the most part these things will not be happening as abuse of patients is not tolerated in any form and the stealing of any body part would not happen. Staff are regulated and checked up on at all times to prevent the very things your friend is claiming. These attacks will be completely real in your friends mind and she will fully believe them which is what makes it so difficult to just sit by and do nothing. Have you told any of the staff about these claims? Because if you havent you should, (after you have checked for signs of abuse for your own piece of mind) these are things the staff treating her really have to know in order to perfect her care. I realise this must be difficult for you as seeing someone you love altered so much is difficult, trust me I really understand but there is light at the end of the tunnel and things do get better in time and you begin to regain the person you thought you may have lost forever, I know I did. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further inquiries and I hope this information/advice has been helpful to you, best of luck!
