Medication?

Postby zisphinx » Wed Feb 08, 2012 6:24 am

I'm seeing a psychiatrist for the first time in a couple of days and was wondering what are your experiences with medication and severe DP/DR? (I may be DDNOS as well) I've had my disorder for about 13 years now... I'm currently 20. Don't post if you're going to go on about other methods such as introspection and a good perspective, because believe you me I am a veteran there. It's time for something new.

Hi, zisphinx! You could post this in a few more forums if you like, sorry this one is a bit slow. Did you see the doc? How did it go?

I didn't think to. I don't want to have a boat load of memberships to sites I do not frequent. Yeah, I saw him... he thought I was depressed and didn't feel that I could be diagnosed as Derealized/Depersonalized, although I clearly have a chronic case. He prescribed me fluoxetine (prozac) and lorazepam (ativan) for my "fits." That ended up horribly exacerbating my symptoms after taking two the day prior. I was experiencing horrid spikes in DP/DR for a few days and stopped taking it cold turkey. I felt so terribly weak... I am seeing another psychiatrist. I really just want to be prescribed Adderall because it makes me feel far more here than anything else (in terms of instant gratification) and I feel that it'd help me with the stressors that lead to fits (never getting things done, no sense of time, not showing up for important things without even a heads up).

Oh, I meant on more forums/subforums here, we allow the same thread to be posted 3 times on different forums if the poster wants to do it.
I think seeing a new psych for a second opinion might be good. You could explain what the other meds did to you and what you think might help.

Hey

I also got DP very young, I was 8. I am 29 now, and in recovery.

I take 5HTP and Omega 3 and vitamin B complex. 5HTP is amazing for depression and anxiety, with no side effects
Most medicaiton makes me worse, especially benzos. I think that taking medication, espcially strong stuff, makes the brain panic more that there is 'danger', and puts up even more barriers (DP/DR).

Please look into using Mindfulness and Trauma Release Exercises. I'm using that as part of my recovery (I also have Borderline Personality/ DID)

Mindfulness meditation is amazing for grounding. If I get a Derealisation attack, and I feel I am 'floating off' I do a Mindfulness body scan. Doing breathing exercises has really helped me to relax and to be more aware of my body.

Having DP/ DR is torture, because you literally feel like you don't exist. Doing TRE and Mindfulness has increased my awareness of myself and that I feel I am waking up from this nightmare.
