That's such a good question. If psychologists and neuroscientists knew how to answer it, they would. Alas, they don't.
This probably wasn't awfully helpful, but just saying that yeah, even experts don't know how it's possible. It's a fact of human life though, and very likely the life of many animals too.
My man studies psychology and I did ask him the other day, "how are humans able to think about thinking?" because I had been reading a bit about brains and nerve cells, and he said "I wish there was a scientist who knew!". Whew!
