Paradoxical reactions

Postby Dark_in_the_Light » Fri Jul 29, 2011 1:05 am

I haven't ever had paradoxical reactions to medicines of any sort before, at least as far as I can recall. I'm wondering if this is along the same lines though. I drastically cut my sugar and caffeine consumption and the last few days I've been as hyper as I've been in a long time. This afternoon, I had a really sugary caffeine loaded drink and promptly fell asleep. I don't feel anywhere near as hyper now.

That sounds odd. You can get a carbohydrate slump after sugar so that might explain it but it does not explain the caffeine or the fact you felt hyper when you had cut them out. Perhaps one for your Dr?

Cracked,
Didn't you (think it was you) recommend consuming high-carb foods during mania to induce the carb-slump to help bring the mania down?

It sounds a bit counterintuitive for the cutting of sugar and caffeine to result in an upswing, but I can see this happening as cutting sugar would effectively cut some of that carb-slump.

I do consume caffeine (2 cups coffee in the morn, and a little in a few pieces of chocolate in the evening for dessert) but it's not excessive. I am also consciously restricting sugar, carbs, and processed foods (just for a healthier diet, not for the cyclothymia) and haven't noticed a surge in mania/energy. Guess this is just more evidence of different body chemistries reacting differently with meds and diet. Would def mention this to the pdoc as maybe they can adjust the AD (I'm assuming that's the med causing the upswing with removal of sugar) to one with less of an uplifting effect; or up the mood stabilizer to counter-balance the current AD.
