I just recently got out of the hospital and ill talk about it more in another forum but i wanted to tell you about something that happened to me there having to do with the conversion disorder when i was there my legs went out on me twice the first time i was in an abandoned part of the hospital and everyone else was on the other side the staff came to check on me and asked me what was wrong.; I told them my legs had gone it they asked me if i needed a wheelchair i told him yes but he never came back so i crawled around till eventually i started banging and they carried me to the quiet room my legs came back later on the second time i was in the cafeteria and it happened i told one of the girls i couldn't walk because of my conversion disorder and she told the staff who couldn't stop laughing i didn't see what was so funny about it apparently it got her going what i want to know has anyone with conversion disorder experienced any type of prejudice for the condition

Hi Passionfruit3.
The response to your Conversion Disorder is not unusual. I don't mean the nurses laughing, (that's disgusting & should be reported,) I mean the fact that CD isn't taken seriously enough by the medical profession in general. To laugh at anyone suffering is cruel. For Nurses to do so is totally unacceptable.
It's time medical professionals were educated in how serious it is & the very real problems & suffering it causes. Too many still believe that people with CD who need crutches or a wheelchair shouldn't be allowed them. They are under the misguided belief that it will make their symptoms worse. Many believe that paying attention to CD sufferers symptoms is negative & that when symptoms are ignored or no-one is observing them, their symptoms disappear.
I had a 7yr fight to get a proper diagnosis for my son, then more of a fight to get crutches so we could leave the hospital reasonably safely followed by another battle for a wheelchair.
I'm appalled, but not suprised, that you were treated so shabbily & I hope you have a decent GP who will ensure you are treated properly in future. Meanwhile, I'd advise that you complain to the hospital about your treatment.

I know that feeling all to well i still hate it when my mom says you know you can really walk it's just your mind making you believe you can't. I hated going to psychiatrist and therapist at first but now i can't get away from them it's like were attatched at the hip. It's going to be a long journey for you im afraid but not alone always remember there will be people rooting for you to make it through this there will also be people booing you ignore them there just obstacles in your path you have to get past them and leave them behind and once you do get past them your depression and conversion disorder will lessen to were it barely affects you thats how it was with me my conversion disorder was so bad i couldnt use several parts of my body now it barely happens anymore you might be the same one day just keep fighing and by the way im one of the people rooting for you

Bart. Sorry to hear how low you're feeling.
Re; Those Psych's that tell you it's in your head, just walk, think positive. Present them with the up to date medical findings on the Neurophysiology of CD & demand that they take you seriously. If they don't, then make a complaint against them. Just because it's fairly common for CD sufferers to be mis-treated doesn't mean it's right & that you have to take that kinda crap. It's extremely bad practice & is a cruel & insensitive way to treat a sick person.
