Can men have BPD?

Or are they just called Narcissist?

I think men don't really get diagnosed BPD as often as women do and they probably get diagnosed with BPD if their behaviours are pretty extreme. But to answer your question, yes, men do get BPD, it's not a gender specific disorder.

NPD and BPD are very different PDs, so I don't see why men with BPD would systematically be diagnosed as NPD. Sure men can have BPD - maybe we're in a slight minority, but we're here.

Cheze is right; there are a few of us guys here who have BPD. With male aggressiveness, our angry outbursts may be written off to testosterone, so we're not diagnosed with BPD nearly as often as women.

Speaking for myself, I don't think I've ever been confused with a narcissist. On the contrary, I have been told at work, on more than one occasion, that I shouldn't make so many self-deprecating jokes.

They certainly can.

It can be harder to diagnose in men however, perhaps because there seems to have always been a stigma that men aren't allowed to show emotion, because we are MEN (300 sparta voice). A lot of men with these issues may not then vocalize the intense things they are going through, like fear of abandonment, breakdowns and crying, self-injury, etc.
Perhaps hide behind anger and substance abuse as a form of coping, even leading to getting it confused with another disorder.

It is indeed out there, and the stigma is starting to fade away this day in age so a lot more men are coming out about the issues they are facing.

I think this is something clinicians need to be aware of. The problem isn't as simple as how gender stereotypes affect the ways people express things, its also that psychiatrists often think they can assess e.g. PD for severity or even diagnosis in a short psychiatric interview which isn't even designed to assess for PD, let alone getting to the point of understanding factors like gender. But yes, pretty much what you said.

Both men and women can have BPD. Both men and women can have NPD.
