How Do I Let Go of "RULES"?

Postby hburg82 » Wed Aug 22, 2012 3:48 am

I place rules on everything...
I do not communicate these rules to others bc they are MY rules, yet I get infuriated and snippy when an unknowing friends breaks my rules.

How do I let go of ALL of these unnecessary rules?

Hi Terry

I have rules in my head for everything too. They can be helpful at work as it keeps every thing orderly and in its place but the rules are also limiting. Like you, the rules are in my head and no one else knows about them and when someone breaches them I get very upset or anxious or angry. Social relationships are a mine field and rules help me regulate every one but I'm completely thrown if people break them.

My most annoying rules are the ones that keep me stuck in e rut, glued to the same daily routine all te tie. I don't know about you but I use them to prevent bedlam and chaos and to make me feel in control but I am also stuck with them.

What stops you dispensing with your rules and why do you think you have them?

I have a lot of rules as well, even for the silliest things like how I eat my yoghurt, and what set of cutlery I use for what meal, and so much more. I get very upset when someone messes with my rules, but I'm hesitant to share these rules with other people because I feel ashamed about having them. I feel ashamed because I'm worried about what people would think about me, worry they'd laugh and think I was stupid.

The rules give me a sense of structure that I otherwise lack very much. I want things to stay the same as much as they possibly can.

I don't think you can let go of all your rules all at once, but maybe you can take a rule, or a few, at a time and just stop following them and see how that goes?

Ditto. I don't like being taken out of my comfort zone.

I try really hard to stick to my rules , I have them for a reason and they always bail me out of bad situations , I will not break them for anyone.
