Hysteroid Dysphoria - anyone heard of?

Postby mumof4 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 1:36 am

Just saw the psych for the first time! Went with referral from doctor presenting with ADD or Borderline traits. After an hour and pages and pages of writing,,,, he has come up with this!! Hysteroid Dysphoria... basically a depression associated with the weather, PMS and chocolate!!!
Seriously yes I eat chocolate and am on SSRI for depression... but doctor says more of an underlying disorder and thinks I am not depressed.. keeps me on SSRIS for anxiety!

Hysteriod Dsyphoria dates back to the 70's and is treated by MAOI's.

Has anyone had any experience with this disorder, MAOI's or any of the above?

Sorry I know I do not make much sense either :(

Thanks so much

I've been in the mental health field for awhile now and this is the first time I'm hearing of this disorder. I would guess that you must have a very interesting psychiatrist.

I do have experience with MAOI's I was on a drug called Emsam. It's one of the newer MAOI's and at a low dose you don't have to worry about changing your diet. On MAOI's you can't eat certain cheeses, as well as some other foods. It's foods that are high in something call tryamine. It was extremely helpful to me. One of the best drugs I've tried.

Hmm, this is interesting. All scientific literature on the subject dates back to 1992 and further, making me wonder if the diagnosis is a bit outdated... It sounds more like an interesting connection they found between carbohydrate consumption and mood, but maybe doesnt warrant a complete diagnosis.
By saying this, I am not at all trying to say you dont experience these things! I am more just speculating on the diagnosis... It feels to me like a partial explanation for mood factors in depressed patients and possibly BPD patients too. But the fact that it has not been mentioned in scientific literature for 20 years worries me.
Was your doctor old? Maybe you could try a second opinion from another psych and see what they think about Hysteroid Dysphoria. It's something I would do just out of interests sake..
Goodluck with your treatment! No matter how old this diagnosis is, at least you now know some of the triggering factors in your mood, and that is a good first step towards treatment.

Oh sorry, I just did a more comprehensive scan on google scholars and found it has been mentioned in scientific literature in the 21st century. It just hasnt been the topic of the paper since 1992. But it is a good sign to see the diagnosis still in use in scientific literature today!
