I'm not sure on the percentage. I tend to lash out more than internalize. Then again, if you look at self-harm for what it really is, I do believe we all do it to a degree.
Those who do drugs in excess.
Those who drink and blackout and drive.
Those who have reckless sex.
Those who drain their bank accounts gambling or shopping.
Those who are anorexic or bulimic.
Those who hurt their bodies by eating too much.
I used to cut when I was a teen, but haven't since. I moved on from that to trying sort of poisonous substances in my foods and drinks. Then I moved on to taking pills. Then drugs. Then drinking (and driving). Then gambling. I evolved (so to speak).
Today I consider what I do to be self-harm, but it's not the textbook kind. For instance, I have been wearing long sleeves all week because I got angry and dug my finger nails into my arm. I didn't notice until I moved my hand and saw blood. I cut my nails down to the nubs after that. Also, when I get really angry, I will bang my fist until the anger goes away. It's how I stop myself from breaking something or from hurting someone else. The other day I punched the air conditioner. I can't even write comfortably, because I think I either badly bruised or broke a little bone in my hand.
