*Ahem* Ladies ...

Postby FloMac » Sun Jun 24, 2012 5:00 am

I was scouring the Internet for good research on the link between BPD and horrible PMS.

I am pretty sure there's a correlation - PMS is worse for women with BPD, but I can't find any literature.

Anyone care to share or link me to some research?

I don't know, but I think it would make a lot of sense really... The hormones throw your emotions off, your emotions magnify due to the bpd, etc?

I have horrible PMS but I don't know if it's MH reasons or being amplified by this god awful pill I'm on :S Well actually, I do know the pill's making the pms worse, I just struggle to work out by how much.

You are right, there absolutely is a correlation! Although, I have no links to share with you. =/

Although, I have read some literature over the last year since I've been diagnosed, and I know a lot of what I've read says that women with BPD tend to have abnormal hormone levels... or thyroid problems... or pituitary gland problems (my older sister has a tumor on her pituitary gland and her body has tricked itself into thinking it was pregnant whilst she is a lesbian... that was lactating. My mom and my oldest sister have hypothyroidism, and all of our hormone levels are ridiculous.) A lot of these little buggers have a lot to do with our menstrual cycle in the first place, so them being out of whack doesn't help any.

I started charting my periods when I was diagnosed, and when I'm in a rage and coming out of it, it almost never fails... I'll look and realize I'm in my PMS week. Or, I'm ridiculously attracted to my spouse and want to rip his clothes off and eventually do... I'll look and I'll be ovulating. And a lot of times, I get a burst of energy two days after my period is good and over, and I'll have that one really level, "normal" week... to be followed by the PMS week of hell.

Yup, our lives are really governed by our menstrual cycle. I aim to break free !
and there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.

get over your hill and see what you find there,
with grace in your heart and flowers in your hair...

I always wished I was a man ...

Of course, before I posted this I looked at the calendar. 7 days before I'm supposed to start - of course - and I have like 2 weeks of PMS ...

I read this article by this doctor who seemed kinda crazy, but maybe I'll try it. He said water pills can help ease the emotional stuff. Maybe I'll try that. Sans caffeine of course.

Thanks

You know I never used to think I had PMS. But since I've gotten a period tracking app on my phone I've realized that, yeah, I tend have outbursts more when PMSing. I actually just looked and I'm PMSing. No wonder why I went off on my boyfriend yesterday.
I think when I know that I'm premenstrual I can regulate myself better. Because when I'm freaking out I'm just like "shut up it's hormones!" And that helps with the little things I get upset over.

I'm going to do some research of my own now! I'll post any links I can find.

I have access to tons of research articles through my school. I found an article on the EBSCOhost database, but it isn't free. Anyway, the abstract has some information.

I have one day a month every month that is really, really, really, really bad. Did I mention it was quite bad :D ? I'm joking but it's no laughing matter. I do believe I do could do some serious harm one day, which is why I try to isolate myself around that time.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder tends to be very common among women with bpd.

I usually feel suicidal or having horrific mood swings for PMS.

Thank Goodness I don't have to deal with this any longer :P But when I did, I had it terribly. I once had an older friend who told me that the things we get upselt about when we have pms have laid dormant and kind of bubble to the surface because we have less ability to stuff them and therefore its a good thing....unless you have bpd and suffer every thing in the extreme. I know I did. I have heard and been told by a doctor that lots of calcium is supposed to help as it also regulates hormones. But, I do remember having several nasty bpd episodes only to get my period the next day or two. I think keeping track of it would be very important & helpful. Knowing when my triggers are coming helps me to prepare for them. It doesn't always stop it but awareness helps.
