Scared of going on anti depressants any advice?

Postby Winterblue » Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:47 pm

Hi guys, my condition has seemed to get worse over the last couple of weeks and my doctor referred me to a psych for prescription of anti depressants. I've tried Zoloft, avanza, cimbalta, cepramil before and all of them caused side effects I couldn't bear. Excessive sweating, no sex drive, weight gain etc...do you think it's worth another go with a different one or should I just try to get through this without meds?

Winter:
Ask about going on Viibryd. My therapist recommended it and It seems to be working for me. It's by no means a cure all but it has really helped me with my thoughts racing. I use to feel as though I was standing in the middle of a vortex and there were all these thoughts swirling around me but I could never get them to form anything. They were fragmented. I don't have that now. It has also helped with stabilizing my emotions. I have no desire to be intimate as of here recent but I don't think that has anything to do with the antidepressant. It goes up to 40mg I believe. They start you off with 10 then 20 and then 40 if needed.

If you feel as though you need something then get on something. I have been on meds off and on most of my adulthood. I would always think I was better and then would stop taking them. I should not have done that. My therapist thinks it is probably best for me to be on something and stay on it. I do feel better. Maybe not better but at least somewhat balanced. That's good enough for me. :)

Best of luck to you. Let me know how it goes.
I have been on the Viibryd now for approximately 7 to 8 weeks.

How long had you been taking the aforementioned ADs? Some of the side-effects abate after a certain time and mostly you have to take the pills at least 3 weeks for them to develop any positive effect. I've been on Efexor (Venlafaxine) for about 10 years and apart from a lowered but not absent sex drive I haven't encountered any negative side effects. People's cerebral metabolisms react very sensitive and differ from person to person.
So if there should be one in the vast amount of different ADs, that can actually help you get more stable you should do anything to find that one out. Never stop to fight for your right to feel better. I hug you and wish you all the strengh you need.

I've been on pills for two or three years and just now trying to get off to see how it goes.

If there are side effects you don't want - as in the side effects outweigh the benefits of your adp - make a list and talk to your psych. You may be able to find a set of pills with mild side effects. I did this because drowsiness and weight gain were two things to avoid, and my brain getting fuzzy.

Obviously take your pills consistently and find a way to document your life/moods day by day to look back with your doctor to see if the pills have made any positive changes. That way you know if they have.

Remember that pills aren't a fix - they're supposed to just cover your symptoms enough to give you that extra lift to get going on your own. It wasn't until I remembered this that I made any steps to recovery.

Good luck. :)

Thanks guys, Fumia needed the hug. Nothing is good forme at the moment so this really is my last resort. I've tried DBT program, quit! Psychotherapy been on for 10 months and running out of sessions, tried exercise, joining meditation group, still not feeling better, no friends, no life and just hopeless. Desperately need some sort of small improvement to keep me going as about to just give up. I was on the previously mentioned meds for all of them past the initial settling in periods (all except Avanza) where I just could keep taking it. I couldn't see or even walk, or balance upright. I also thought of suicide more on that one so they took me off it immediately. Just wandering why there are all these different ones and why do some work on people and others don't? Is it really a case of me trying every single one there is? That would take years? Isn't there an easy way to just tell me which one will work?
